Explanation of the Verse:
This profound verse establishes a universal law that applies to every nation, community, and generation throughout history. Allah (Glorified be He) declares that for every people—whether they believe or disbelieve—there is a fixed, predetermined term and an appointed time for their existence and for the arrival of divine justice.
When that appointed time comes—whether it is the time of punishment for those who persist in disbelief and reject the messengers, or the time of death for any soul—it cannot be delayed even for a single moment, nor can it be brought forward. The precision of this divine decree is absolute and beyond human interference.
This verse was revealed as a response to the disbelievers of Makkah who mockingly challenged the Prophet (peace be upon him) to hasten the punishment they were warned about. Allah responded that the punishment is not a matter of human demand; it follows a divine timetable that is fixed and unchangeable. The mention of "a single hour" emphasizes that even the smallest fraction of time cannot be added to or subtracted from the appointed term.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a powerful lesson for every soul. It reminds us that life is a precious, limited trust from Allah, and every moment counts. The certainty of this appointed time should awaken us from heedlessness and inspire us to seize the opportunity of life before it slips away. Just as no nation could escape its fate, no individual can escape their own appointed hour.
Let this truth fill your heart with urgency and purpose. The time you have right now is a gift—use it in obedience to your Creator, in seeking His pleasure, and in doing good to others. Do not postpone repentance, do not delay good deeds, and do not be deceived by the illusion of endless tomorrows. The wise person is the one who lives with the awareness that their appointed time is near, and who prepares for the eternal life to come. Turn to Allah today, before the hour arrives that cannot be delayed or advanced, and let every breath you take be a step toward His mercy and forgiveness.
