- الْحَسَنَةَ (Al-Hasanah): Ease, prosperity, and well-being — such as abundance, health, and security.

- السَّرَّاءُ (As-Sarrāʾ): Joy and comfort.
- بَغْتَةً (Baghtatan): Suddenly, without any prior warning or expectation.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After the people of a town rejected the messengers sent to them and persisted in their denial, Allah first tested them with hardship — poverty, illness, and loss — so that they might humble themselves and turn back to Him. But when they did not learn the lesson from adversity, Allah, in His perfect wisdom and mercy, replaced that hardship with ease and prosperity. He gave them health in their bodies, abundance in their wealth, and security in their lives, so much so that they multiplied greatly in numbers and their property flourished.
Yet, instead of recognizing this as a divine blessing calling for gratitude and obedience, they became arrogant and deluded. They said: "We have only experienced what our forefathers experienced — times of hardship and times of ease. This is just the cycle of time; it has nothing to do with divine punishment or reward." They dismissed the trials and the blessings alike as mere coincidence, refusing to see the hand of Allah in either.
They failed to understand that the hardship was meant to awaken their hearts, and the ease was meant to test their gratitude. So, when they became fully engrossed in their arrogance and felt completely secure, Allah seized them with sudden punishment — a torment that came upon them all at once, while they were utterly unaware and had no time to repent or escape.
A Call to Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every soul. How often do we mistake the alternation of ease and hardship in our lives for mere chance? Allah, the Most Merciful, sends us gentle reminders through difficulty to draw us closer to Him, and He grants us blessings to see whether we will be grateful or heedless. Do not wait until the punishment comes suddenly — for when it arrives, no opportunity for repentance remains. Let every moment of ease be a reason to thank your Lord, and every moment of hardship be a reason to turn to Him in humility. The door of repentance is open now — do not delay until it is too late. Indeed, Allah loves those who return to Him, and His mercy encompasses all things.
