Surah Al-Jinn — Verse 6

• يَعُوذُونَ (yaʿūdhūn): They seek refuge or protection.
• رَهَقًا (rahaqan): Overwhelming fear, terror, oppression, or an increase in arrogance and transgression.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse reveals a dark chapter from the era of ignorance (Jāhiliyyah) before the advent of Islam. When a man from among the humans found himself in a desolate, frightening place—such as a remote valley or a barren wilderness—he would cry out for protection, saying: *"I seek refuge with the master of this valley from the evil of his foolish followers."* He would call upon the jinn, believing that these unseen beings had power over the land and could shield him from harm.

But what was the outcome of this misguided practice? Instead of bringing safety and peace, it only increased the humans in fear, terror, and submission to the jinn. The jinn, in turn, grew in arrogance and insolence, boasting: *"We have subdued both humans and jinn!"* Thus, the very act of seeking refuge in the jinn multiplied the humans' dread and deepened their spiritual degradation.

This verse is a powerful lesson for all of humanity. It exposes the futility and danger of turning to anyone other than Allah—whether it be jinn, sorcerers, fortune-tellers, or so-called spiritual healers—for protection and guidance. Such reliance is a form of major shirk (associating partners with Allah), and it only leads to greater fear, confusion, and distance from the truth. The more a person depends on these false refuges, the more they enslave themselves to darkness.

A Call to the Believers:

Dear reader, reflect on this: Why would you seek shelter from a creation that is itself weak and in need of Allah's protection? The jinn, like humans, are created beings—they cannot benefit or harm anyone except by Allah's will. True security, true peace, and true refuge lie only in the One who created the heavens and the earth, the One who says to a thing, "Be," and it is.

When you place your trust in Allah alone, your heart finds tranquility. When you recite His words and seek His protection, no force in the universe can overwhelm you. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us to say: *"I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created"*—a simple, powerful supplication that connects us directly to our Creator.

So, turn your heart away from the false refuges of this world. Do not let fear drive you to the sorcerers and charlatans who exploit human weakness. Instead, strengthen your bond with Allah through prayer, remembrance, and sincere reliance upon Him. For whoever seeks refuge in Allah has grasped the firmest handhold that never breaks—and in that lies true honor, true safety, and true success in this life and the Hereafter.
