Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ظَنُّوا — They assumed or thought with certainty (in this context, a false assumption).
- لَن يَبْعَثَ — Will never resurrect or raise (from the dead).
- أَحَدًا — Anyone, any single person.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues the narration of the conversation between the jinn and their people, as revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Here, Allah informs us that the disbelieving humans held the same false belief that the disbelieving jinn held: that Allah would never resurrect anyone after death for judgment and recompense.
The verse addresses the jinn directly, saying: "And that they (the humans) assumed, just as you assumed — O company of jinn — that Allah would never raise anyone (from the dead)." This shared misconception united both groups in their denial of the Hereafter. They both rejected the idea of resurrection, thinking that death was the absolute end and that no one would be brought back to life for accountability.
This false assumption stemmed from their lack of faith in Allah's infinite power and wisdom. They could not conceive that the Creator who originated life from nothing could easily restore it after death. Their limited understanding led them to deny what is rationally possible and divinely promised.
Reflection and Da'wah:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every soul: the denial of resurrection is not a new phenomenon — it has been the stance of disbelievers throughout history, whether from among humans or jinn. Yet, the Quran repeatedly affirms that resurrection is not only possible but certain, for the One who created the heavens and the earth without a previous model is fully capable of recreating what He has already created once.
Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart to the reality of the Hereafter. The very fact that Allah mentions this shared false assumption of both humans and jinn serves as a warning: do not let your intellect or desires lead you to deny what your Lord has promised. The resurrection is the moment when every secret will be revealed, every deed will be weighed, and every soul will be recompensed with absolute justice.
If you truly ponder the creation around you — the revival of dry earth after rain, the return of life to barren lands — you will find countless signs pointing to the ease of resurrection for Allah. So, do not be like those who assumed wrongly and were later filled with regret. Instead, prepare for that inevitable day with sincere faith and righteous deeds, for the One who promises resurrection is the One who never breaks His promise.
