Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • ظَنَنَّا (zanannā): We assumed or thought.
  • لَّن تَقُولَ (lan taqūla): Will never say or utter.
  • عَلَى اللَّهِ كَذِبًا (ʿalā Allāhi kadhiban): A lie against Allah.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, the jinn are recounting their state before they heard the Qur’an. They confess: "We had assumed that neither humans nor jinn would ever dare to utter a lie against Allah." This was their initial, naive trust in the words of the polytheists—both from among humans and jinn—who claimed that Allah had a spouse and a son. The jinn had accepted these false statements out of blind imitation, never imagining that anyone could be so audacious as to fabricate such grave falsehoods about their Creator.

This admission reveals a profound truth: the natural disposition (fitrah) of created beings is to hold Allah in the highest reverence, believing that no one would ever speak falsely about Him. Yet, when the jinn heard the Qur’an, their eyes were opened to the reality that some had indeed been lying against Allah, attributing to Him partners and offspring. This realization shook them to the core and led them to embrace the truth of Islam, as they recognized the stark contrast between the pure message of the Qur’an and the corrupt claims they had previously accepted.

A Da‘wah Reflection:

Dear reader, ponder this: even the jinn—beings unseen to us—were moved to faith when they encountered the truth. Their honesty in admitting their past ignorance is a lesson for us all. How often do we accept claims about Allah, religion, or life without verification? How often do we follow traditions or hearsay without checking them against the Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah? This verse invites you to purify your belief, to return to the pristine message of Islam, and to never settle for anything less than the truth about your Lord. Allah is far above any imperfection, and His words are the ultimate criterion. Let this be your starting point to seek knowledge, to love Allah with certainty, and to live a life that reflects His glory—free from falsehood and full of sincere devotion.

4وَأَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ سَفِيهُنَا عَلَى اللَّهِ شَطَطًا
And that our foolish one has been saying about Allah an excessive transgression.

6وَأَنَّهُ كَانَ رِجَالٌ مِّنَ الْإِنسِ يَعُوذُونَ بِرِجَالٍ مِّنَ الْجِنِّ فَزَادُوهُمْ رَهَقًا
And there were men from mankind who sought refuge in men from the jinn, so they [only] increased them in burden.
7وَأَنَّهُمْ ظَنُّوا كَمَا ظَنَنتُمْ أَن لَّن يَبْعَثَ اللَّهُ أَحَدًا
And they had thought, as you thought, that Allah would never send anyone [as a messenger].
