Word Meanings:
- مَا سَلَكَكُمْ (ma salakakum): What inserted you, or what caused you to enter.
- سَقَرَ (Saqar): One of the names of Hellfire, denoting its intense heat and scorching flames.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse is part of a vivid scene on the Day of Judgment, where the dwellers of Paradise—the righteous believers—turn to one another and ask about the criminals who have been cast into the blazing Fire. They inquire: "What has brought you into Saqar?" This question is not born of mockery or arrogance, but of astonishment and a desire to understand what could have led these people to such a terrible fate. It is a question that carries both a lesson and a warning, as the believers seek to comprehend the reasons behind the downfall of those who once lived among them.
The answer comes from the condemned themselves, as they reflect on their past deeds with regret and sorrow. They admit that they were not among those who performed the prayer, nor did they feed the poor and needy. They engaged in idle talk and falsehood with those who were misguided, and they denied the Day of Recompense—until death overtook them while they were still immersed in their errors and sins.
This exchange highlights a profound truth: the path to Saqar is not a single act, but a series of choices—neglecting worship, withholding kindness, indulging in vanity, and rejecting the truth. The question "What has brought you into Saqar?" serves as a mirror for every soul, urging us to examine our own lives. Are we establishing prayer? Are we caring for the less fortunate? Are we guarding our tongues from falsehood? Are we mindful of the Hereafter?
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse is a gentle yet powerful reminder from the Qur'an, inviting you to pause and reflect. The believers in Paradise did not ask this question to humiliate, but to awaken hearts. Today, you have the opportunity to answer this question before it is asked of you in the Hereafter. The doors of repentance are open, and the mercy of Allah is vast. Let this verse inspire you to strengthen your connection with your Creator through prayer, to extend a helping hand to those in need, and to fill your time with what is beneficial and true. Every good deed you do now is a shield against the Fire and a key to the Gardens of delight. Do not wait until it is too late—seize this moment, for Allah loves those who turn back to Him, and He is ever ready to forgive and guide.
