Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Musalleen (المُصَلِّينَ): Those who perform the prescribed prayers (Salah) with devotion and regularity, establishing the obligatory acts of worship.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, we hear the response of the guilty ones when they are asked by the people of Paradise: "What has brought you into the Scorching Fire?" Their answer is a confession of their neglect and heedlessness in the worldly life. They say plainly: "We were not among those who performed the prayer."
This is a profound admission — they do not say "we did not believe" or "we rejected the messengers," but rather they point to the very foundation of faith in action: the prayer. The absence of prayer in their lives was the gateway that led them to every other form of corruption. When a person abandons the connection with their Lord — the five daily prayers that purify the soul, remind them of their purpose, and restrain them from sin — they open themselves to being led astray by their desires and by the whispers of Satan.
The verse highlights that prayer is not merely a ritual; it is the lifeline of the believer. It is the first deed for which a servant will be held accountable on the Day of Judgment, and when it is sound, all other deeds are sound. The people of the Fire themselves recognize this truth, for they trace their destruction back to this very abandonment.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse is a gentle yet powerful reminder from your Lord — a warning wrapped in mercy, revealed so that you may never find yourself in this situation. Imagine standing before your Creator on that awesome Day, and being asked why you are being led to the Fire. Would you have an answer better than theirs? Or would your answer be one of regret?
The beauty of Islam is that the door of repentance is open until the moment of death. If you have been negligent in your prayers, know that your Lord is Forgiving and Merciful. He calls you to return to Him, to establish the prayer, and to taste the sweetness of standing before Him in humility five times a day. The prayer is your protection, your peace, and your means of success in this life and the next.
Do not let the prayer be the very thing you miss — for it is the key to Paradise, the light in the grave, and the intercessor on the Day of Judgment. Begin today, and let your heart find rest in the remembrance of Allah. For truly, in the prayer lies the salvation of the soul, and in its abandonment lies the ruin that these people confessed to with sorrow and regret.
