Word Meanings:

  • Al-Miskin (المِسْكِين): The poor and needy person who is unable to meet their basic needs, often one who is in a state of visible destitution or extreme poverty.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, the inhabitants of Hellfire are recounting the reasons that led them to their terrible fate. Among the sins they confess to is their neglect of the poor and needy: *"And we did not feed the destitute."* This is a confession of their failure to fulfill a fundamental duty of compassion and social responsibility that Allah has placed upon humanity. They admit that they not only refrained from feeding the poor themselves, but they also failed to encourage others to do so — a double negligence that reflects a heart devoid of mercy and a soul unmoved by the suffering of others.

This verse is part of a larger passage where the people of Hell are asked: *"What led you into the Scorching Fire?"* Their answer reveals a chain of spiritual failures: they did not pray, they did not feed the poor, they engaged in idle talk with those who strayed, and they denied the Day of Judgment. The mention of feeding the poor alongside prayer is significant — it shows that in Islam, worship of Allah and service to His creation are inseparable. True faith is not merely a private matter between the servant and his Lord; it manifests in tangible acts of kindness, generosity, and care for those in need.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

This verse is a powerful reminder for every believer to examine their own relationship with the less fortunate. The Qur'an repeatedly pairs prayer with charity, and this pairing is no accident — it teaches us that a heart connected to Allah must naturally overflow with compassion for His creatures. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: *"He is not a believer whose stomach is filled while his neighbor goes hungry."* (Reported by Al-Hakim)

Let this verse inspire you to look around your community today. Is there a family struggling to put food on the table? A neighbor who cannot afford their next meal? An orphan who needs support? The gates of goodness are wide open, and every act of feeding a hungry soul is a seed planted for your own salvation. The people of Hell regret this neglect — but you still have the chance to act, to give, and to earn the pleasure of Allah. Do not let this opportunity pass you by, for the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: *"Save yourself from the Fire even by giving half a date in charity."* (Agreed upon)

Feeding the poor is not merely a charitable act — it is a means of purifying your wealth, softening your heart, and drawing closer to Allah. It is a deed that will intercede for you on the Day when no wealth or children will avail, and only a sound heart brought to Allah will find success. So be among those who feed the hungry, and let your hands be a source of mercy in this world and a treasure for you in the Hereafter.
