Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "La uqsimu" (لَا أُقْسِمُ): This is a stronger form of oath, emphasizing the importance of what follows. It means "I do swear" or "I swear emphatically."
  • "An-nafs" (النَّفْس): The soul or self — the inner essence of a human being.
  • "Al-lawwāmah" (اللَّوَّامَة): The self that constantly reproaches, blames, and criticizes itself. It is the conscience that stirs within a person, urging them toward good and rebuking them for falling into sin or negligence.

The Interpretation:

In this profound verse, Allah — the Most High — takes a solemn oath by the self-reproaching soul, the conscience that never rests easy with wrongdoing. This is the soul of the believer who, no matter how much good they do, always feels they could have done more. It is the inner voice that whispers: "Why did you miss that prayer? Why did you speak that harsh word? Why did you neglect that act of charity?" This soul is a sign of living faith — because when a person's heart is alive, their conscience keeps them awake to their shortcomings, pushing them toward repentance and self-improvement.

Allah's oath by this soul is a magnificent honor bestowed upon it, and it carries a profound message: the very existence of this self-critical conscience is evidence of the truth of the Resurrection and the Day of Reckoning. For why would a soul feel guilt, regret, and the urge to correct itself, if there were no ultimate accountability? The very design of human conscience points to a final justice.

This verse comes as a direct response to those who doubt that Allah can resurrect them after death — who question how scattered bones could ever be reassembled. Allah swears by the Day of Judgment and by this self-reproaching soul that resurrection is certain and inevitable. He then poses a rhetorical question: "Does man think that We will never assemble his bones?" — affirming that not only will the bones be gathered, but even the finest details of the fingertips will be perfectly restored.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse invites you to look within yourself. That inner voice that troubles you when you do wrong — that feeling of guilt that lingers after a mistake — that is not your enemy; it is your greatest ally. It is a gift from your Creator, a compass pointing you back to Him. Cherish it, listen to it, and let it guide you toward sincere repentance. For if your soul still blames you, it means your heart is still alive, and there is still time to return to Allah before the Day when every soul will face what it has done. Let this self-reproaching soul be your companion on the path to Paradise, and never silence it with heedlessness.
