Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Kalla (كَلَّا): A strong Arabic particle of rebuke and deterrence, meaning "No indeed!" or "Absolutely not!" It is used to reject the false assumptions of the disbelievers.
- Balaghat (بَلَغَتِ): Reached or arrived at.
- Taraqi (التَّرَاقِي): The plural of *tarquwah* — the collarbone area at the upper part of the chest, where the throat meets the chest cavity. It refers to the moment when the soul reaches the throat at the point of death.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse shatters the illusion of those who live heedlessly, thinking they will never be called to account. Allah says: "No indeed! When the soul reaches the collarbones" — that is, when death approaches and the breath of a dying person rises to the uppermost part of the chest, right at the throat. At that critical, terrifying moment, all worldly pretensions vanish. The dying person sees the angels of death, realizes that this is the final farewell to everything they knew, and understands — too late — that the Hereafter is real.
This is a powerful wake-up call. The disbelievers of Quraysh and all who deny the resurrection imagined that death would be the end of everything, that they would simply rot in the earth and never be questioned. Allah refutes this notion with a decisive "Kalla!" — No, absolutely not! Death is not the end; it is merely the doorway to an eternal reality. The moment the soul reaches the throat, the truth becomes undeniable, but by then, no repentance will be accepted.
The verse also hints at the scene that follows: the helplessness of the dying person, the desperate attempts of family and friends to find a healer or a magician to save them, and the crushing realization that all human efforts are futile against the decree of Allah. At that moment, the soul is being pulled from the body, and the person is caught between the agony of leaving this world and the terror of what awaits in the next.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse is not meant to frighten you into despair, but to awaken you into action. Every one of us will face this moment — the moment when the soul reaches the collarbones. No wealth, no status, no loved ones will be able to help us then. The only thing that will matter is what we sent forward: our faith, our good deeds, our repentance, and our relationship with our Creator.
So, before that moment arrives, turn to Allah with a sincere heart. Pray your five daily prayers, give charity, seek forgiveness for your sins, and strive to live a life pleasing to Him. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us that Allah's mercy encompasses everything, and that He accepts the repentance of His servants as long as the soul has not yet reached the throat. Do not delay — for none of us knows when that moment will come.
This verse is a mercy from Allah, a reminder that this worldly life is temporary and that the true, everlasting life is in the Hereafter. Let it be the reason you change your course today, so that when your soul reaches your collarbones, you will meet your Lord with a heart at peace, hopeful of His mercy and eager for His Paradise.
