Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Al-Taffat" (التفت): Wrapped around, intertwined, or coiled together.
  • "Al-Saaq" (الساق): Literally means "leg" or "shin," but in this context it symbolically refers to hardship, severity, or distress. Some scholars also interpret it literally as the two legs of a dying person.

Explanation of the Verse:

When the soul reaches the throat of a dying person, and the reality of death becomes undeniable, the trials and tribulations of this life come together with the terrors of the Hereafter. The verse describes a moment of overwhelming intensity: one leg wraps around the other, symbolizing the intertwining of two great hardships—the final agonies of leaving this world and the first shocks of what lies beyond.

Some scholars explain this as the literal intertwining of a person's legs as they are wrapped in the burial shroud, while others see it as a metaphor for the convergence of two severe trials: the last day of this worldly life meeting the first day of the next. At this critical juncture, the dying person can no longer move or help themselves—they are completely helpless, facing the reality that they are departing from everything they knew.

This powerful imagery serves as a profound reminder that every soul will face this moment. The comfort and distractions of this world will vanish, and only one's deeds will accompany them. Yet, for those who lived righteously, placed their trust in Allah, and prepared for this meeting, there is hope and mercy. The verse calls upon us to reflect: are we ready for the moment when our legs intertwine in the final struggle? Are we prepared to meet our Lord with a heart full of faith and a record of good deeds?

This is a call to wake up from the slumber of heedlessness—to realize that life is fleeting, and the Hereafter is eternal. Let this verse inspire you to turn back to Allah, to seek His forgiveness, and to live a life that will make that final moment easier. For indeed, Allah's mercy is vast, and His door of repentance is open until the very last breath.
