Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • وَظَنَّ (wa-ẓanna): Here it means "he was certain" or "he realized with certainty," not just a passing thought or doubt. In this context, it denotes absolute conviction.
  • الْفِرَاقُ (al-firāq): The separation — specifically, the parting from this worldly life, from family, wealth, and all that one holds dear.

Explanation of the Verse:

In the throes of death, when the soul reaches the collarbone and the dying person gasps for their final breaths, a profound and terrifying certainty dawns upon them: this is the parting. No longer is death a distant idea or a vague fear — it becomes an undeniable reality. The veil of heedlessness is torn away, and the dying person knows with absolute conviction that they are leaving this world forever. This is not merely a suspicion or a guess; it is a firm, unshakable knowledge born from witnessing the angels of death and feeling the transition from the last moments of this life to the first moments of the Hereafter. At that instant, all worldly attachments — wealth, status, family, and ambitions — crumble into insignificance. The soul realizes that its true journey is toward Allah, and that every person will be brought before Him on the Day of Judgment, destined for either Paradise or Hellfire.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse is a gentle yet powerful reminder that death is not a distant event reserved for others — it is a reality that awaits every one of us. The moment of parting will come when we least expect it, and at that moment, no wealth can save us, no loved ones can shield us, and no worldly achievement can accompany us. But here is the beautiful news: Allah, in His infinite mercy, has given us this life as a precious opportunity to prepare for that moment. Every prayer we offer, every act of kindness we extend, every sincere repentance we make is a provision for that journey. Do not wait until the pangs of death to realize what truly matters. Turn to your Lord now, with a humble heart, and let the certainty of this parting inspire you to live a life of purpose, righteousness, and love for Allah. For the one who prepares well for that farewell will find, on the other side, a welcome more beautiful than anything this world could ever offer — the eternal pleasure of Allah and the gardens of Paradise.
