Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • أُقِّتَتْ (Uqqitat): Means their time was appointed or fixed; they were gathered and assigned a specific time for a decisive moment.

Tafsir (Explanation):

When the stars are extinguished and their light fades away, when the sky is split apart, when the mountains are scattered into dust blown by the winds, and when the messengers are appointed a fixed time and gathered for their appointed hour — the hour of judgment between them and their nations — it will be said: "For what great day were the messengers delayed?" They were delayed for the Day of Decision and Separation between all of creation. And what will make you know, O human, what the Day of Decision is — its severity and terror? Woe on that Day to those who deny this promised Day.

The messengers, peace be upon them, were given a specific time to bear witness against their communities. They will be gathered together on the Day of Resurrection to testify regarding the nations to whom they were sent — whether those nations believed or rejected their messages. This appointment is a sign of the certainty of that Day and the justice that will be established therein.

Reflection and Da'wah:

This verse reminds us that even the greatest of Allah's creation — the messengers whom He chose and honored — are subject to His appointed times. Nothing escapes His decree. The gathering of the messengers on that Day is not merely for their own account, but to serve as witnesses against those who rejected the truth. Imagine the honor of standing among the prophets, yet also imagine the weight of their testimony against those who turned away.

Dear reader, this is a call to reflect: if the messengers themselves await that appointed time, how can we afford to live heedlessly? The Day will surely come — a Day when every soul will be held to account. But Allah, in His infinite mercy, has sent these very messengers to guide us before that Day arrives. Embrace their message, follow their example, and let the certainty of that appointment inspire you to draw closer to your Lord. The doors of repentance are open now; do not wait until the Day when time is no more. Let this verse awaken in your heart a sincere desire to prepare for that meeting with your Creator, for truly, the success of that Day belongs to those who believed and did righteous deeds.
