Word Meanings:

  • Waylun (وَيْلٌ): A word denoting severe destruction, ruin, and intense suffering. It is often understood as a valley in Hell or a severe punishment.
  • Yawma'idhin (يَوْمَئِذٍ): "On that Day" — referring to the Day of Resurrection.
  • Lil-Mukadhdhibin (لِلْمُكَذِّبِينَ): "For those who deny" — those who reject the truth, specifically the resurrection and Allah's power.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse delivers a powerful and solemn warning: "Woe on that Day to those who deny." It refers to the Day of Judgment, when every soul will be held accountable for its deeds. The "woe" here signifies utter destruction, humiliation, and a painful chastisement reserved for those who rejected the signs of Allah, denied His power to resurrect the dead, and refused to believe in the truth brought by His messengers. On that Day, the reality they once mocked will become undeniable, and their denial will turn into regret and despair. The repetition of this phrase throughout the chapter serves as a recurring refrain, emphasizing the certainty of this punishment for every category of deniers — whether they denied creation, resurrection, or the divine message itself.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse is not merely a threat; it is a mercy in disguise. Allah, in His infinite compassion, warns us now so that we may never face that woe. He gives us the opportunity to reflect, repent, and return to Him before the Day when no repentance will be accepted. Imagine the peace of standing before your Lord with a heart full of faith, knowing you believed in His power and His promise. The Quran calls us to open our eyes to the signs around us — the creation of the heavens and the earth, the cycle of life and death — all pointing to a Creator who is fully capable of bringing us back. Do not be among those who deny, for their end is loss. But be among those who affirm, for their end is eternal bliss. Let this verse be a wake-up call to strengthen your faith and live a life that pleases Allah, so that on that Day, you will hear not "woe," but the greeting of peace and mercy from your Lord.
