Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- الليل (Al-Layl): The night, the period of darkness that follows sunset.
- لباسًا (Libāsan): A garment or clothing; something that covers, conceals, and protects the wearer.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound verse, Allah draws our attention to one of His magnificent signs in the universe: the night. He tells us that He made the night as a garment—a covering that wraps around the earth and its inhabitants with its darkness, just as clothing wraps around a person's body.
Think about the nature of a garment: it conceals what is beneath it, provides comfort and protection, and gives a sense of security. Similarly, the night's darkness acts as a universal veil. When night falls, it covers everything—the mountains, the seas, the cities, and all creatures—with its shade. It hides people's activities and gives them privacy, allowing them to rest, sleep, and recover from the toil of the day.
This imagery is deeply meaningful. Just as you would not walk out in public without proper clothing, the night provides a natural "covering" for all creation. It allows the believer to find tranquility, to retreat from the busyness of life, and to renew their energy for the next day. It is a mercy from Allah, a sign of His perfect design and His care for His creation.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this simple yet profound blessing. How often do we take the night for granted? Imagine a life without darkness—no rest, no privacy, no break from the scorching sun or the demands of the day. The night is not a coincidence; it is a deliberate gift from the Most Merciful. It invites you to recognize the wisdom and power of your Creator.
When you lie down in the stillness of the night, remember that the One who wrapped the world in darkness is the same One who watches over you. Let this verse increase your gratitude and draw you closer to Allah. Thank Him for this covering of mercy, and let the night be a time to reconnect with your Lord through prayer and reflection. Indeed, in every sign of nature, there is a lesson for those who ponder—and the night is one of the greatest teachers of Allah's love and care.
