Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Maʿāshan (مَعَاشًا): A means of livelihood; the time and space in which one seeks sustenance and conducts the affairs of daily life.

Tafsir (Explanation):

After mentioning the darkness of the night and its role in providing rest and tranquility, Allah now draws our attention to the day and its vital purpose. He says: "And We made the day a means of livelihood." This means that Allah, in His infinite wisdom and mercy, designed the daylight hours as a time for you to move about, work, and strive in seeking your provision. The sun rises, illuminating the earth, so that you may travel, trade, farm, build, and engage in all the activities that sustain your life and the lives of those you care for.

The night was made for stillness and sleep, while the day was made for movement and effort. This beautiful balance is a sign of Allah’s perfect creation—a rhythm that allows human beings to fulfill both their physical needs and their spiritual purpose. The day is not merely a period of brightness; it is a divine gift, a "field" in which you are invited to labor and reap the rewards of Allah’s bounty. It is a time to seek the halal (lawful) provisions that Allah has distributed among His servants, and to reflect on how this cycle of night and day is a manifestation of His mercy and care for humanity.

A Daʿwah Reflection:

Ponder, dear reader, on this simple yet profound blessing: every single morning, the sun rises anew, and with it comes another opportunity to earn, to serve, and to grow. This is not a random occurrence—it is a deliberate act of your Creator, who knows that you need both rest and activity to thrive. When you step out into the daylight, remember that you are walking in a world that Allah has prepared for you, and that your efforts to provide for yourself and your family are not merely worldly pursuits—they are acts of worship when accompanied by sincere intention. So, go forth with gratitude, work with diligence, and never forget that the One who made the day for your livelihood is the same One who will provide for you from ways you could never imagine. Let this verse fill your heart with hope and your hands with purpose, for Allah has not left you without guidance or provision—He has woven both into the very fabric of time itself.
