Word Meanings:

  • "Fathooqoo" (فَذُوقُوا): "So taste" — an imperative addressed to the disbelievers, commanding them to experience the punishment.
  • "Falan nazeedakum" (فَلَن نَّزِيدَكُمْ): "For We will not increase you" — a definitive negation, emphasizing that no relief or reduction will come.
  • "Illa 'adhaban" (إِلَّا عَذَابًا): "Except [in] punishment" — meaning their increase will only be in torment, not in anything else.

Explanation of the Verse:

On the Day of Judgment, when the disbelievers are cast into the Fire, they will be told: "Taste, then, the punishment for your denial and your deeds!" This is a direct address to them, making them fully aware that what they face is the just recompense for their arrogance and rejection of the truth. Then comes the most terrifying part: "For We will not increase you except in punishment." This means that every moment they spend in Hell will bring them more torment, not less. Their suffering will never diminish, nor will they find any respite or mercy. The punishment will be layered upon itself, growing in intensity and severity, with no end and no relief. This is the ultimate consequence for those who refused to fear the Day of Reckoning and who mocked the messengers of Allah.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on the weight of this verse. Allah, the Most Merciful, does not wish for anyone to face such a fate. He sent His messengers, revealed His books, and gave countless opportunities for repentance and guidance. The door of mercy remains open in this life — every breath you take is a chance to turn back to Him, to seek His forgiveness, and to embrace the light of Islam. The punishment described here is not a threat for the sake of intimidation alone; it is a loving warning from your Creator, who desires nothing but good for you. He says in another verse: "Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins'" (Az-Zumar 39:53). So, do not let this warning pass you by without action. Rush to His mercy before the day comes when no increase will be given except in punishment. Let this verse be a wake-up call that softens your heart, draws you closer to your Lord, and fills you with hope in His boundless grace — for He is the One who accepts repentance and loves those who return to Him.
