Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- الرُّوح (Ar-Rūḥ): This refers to the angel Jibrīl (Gabriel), peace be upon him, who is distinguished by this noble title due to his honoured status and his role in delivering divine revelation.
- صَفًّا (Ṣaffan): Standing in rows, aligned and orderly, in a state of complete humility and reverence before Allah.
- صَوَابًا (Ṣawāban): Speech that is true, correct, and right — words of justice, truth, and proper intercession.
Explanation of the Verse:
On that tremendous Day — the Day of Judgment — when the angel Jibrīl and all the angels will stand in perfect, humble rows before their Lord, not a single soul will dare to speak. The entire creation will be silenced by the overwhelming majesty and awe of Allah. No one will utter a word, no one will intercede, and no one will even breathe a request — except for the one whom Ar-Raḥmān (The Most Merciful) has granted permission to speak. And even then, that person will only be allowed to say what is absolutely true and correct — words of righteousness, such as the testimony of Allah’s Oneness, or an intercession that is just and deserving.
This verse paints a breathtaking picture of the Day when all voices are hushed, all ranks are aligned, and all hearts are consumed with the fear and reverence of their Creator. It reminds us that on that Day, no one will have any power or say except by Allah’s leave — and that leave is granted only to those whom He is pleased with, and only for those who deserve it.
A Call to Reflection:
Imagine that scene: the heavens and the earth filled with angels standing in perfect rows, silent, awaiting the command of their Lord. Even the mighty Jibrīl — the one who descended with revelation — stands in humility. This is the reality of that Day. So, dear believer, let this verse awaken your heart. The One who controls that Day is the same One who controls your today. He is Ar-Raḥmān — the Most Merciful — who grants permission to speak only to those who lived in truth and spoke in truth. Therefore, make your words in this world words of ṣawāb — words of honesty, justice, and remembrance of Allah. And make your deeds such that you may be among those whom the Most Merciful is pleased to permit to speak on that awesome Day. For the key to that honour is simple: say what is right, believe in what is true, and live a life that pleases your Lord. May Allah make us among those who are granted His permission and His pleasure.
