Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Rabb (رَّبِّ): The Lord, Master, and Sustainer who nurtures and manages all of creation.
- Al-Rahman (الرَّحْمَٰنِ): The Most Merciful — a name of Allah that denotes His all-encompassing mercy that covers everything in this world and the Hereafter.
- Lā yamlikūna minhu khitāban (لَا يَمْلِكُونَ مِنْهُ خِطَابًا): They have no power or ability to address Him or speak to Him (on their own initiative).
Tafsir (Explanation):
After describing the magnificent rewards prepared for the righteous — gardens, youth, overflowing cups, and peace — Allah now reminds us of His supreme majesty and authority. He is the Lord of the heavens, the earth, and everything that exists between them. Nothing escapes His knowledge, power, or dominion. He is Al-Rahman, the Most Merciful, whose mercy embraces all of creation in this life and extends to the believers in the Hereafter.
Yet, despite His infinite mercy, His majesty is so overwhelming that on that Day, no one — not even the angels or the prophets — will dare to speak or intercede without His explicit permission. The verse states clearly: "They have no power to address Him." This means that no soul can approach Allah or plead its case on its own. No one can say a word, ask a question, or intercede for another unless Allah Himself grants that permission.
This serves as a powerful reminder of two truths: First, Allah's absolute sovereignty — He is the King who does as He wills, and no one can question His decisions. Second, His complete mercy — for despite this awe-inspiring authority, He has opened the door of intercession for whom He pleases, and He has taught us to call upon Him through His beautiful names and attributes.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder the greatness of this verse. The One who owns the heavens and the earth, who holds every atom in existence, is the same One who invites you to call upon Him at any time, in any place, without appointment or permission. In this life, He says: "Call upon Me; I will respond to you" (Ghafir: 60). But on that Day, no one will speak without His leave. So seize this golden opportunity now — before that Day arrives — to turn to Him in supplication, to seek His forgiveness, and to build a relationship with Him through sincere worship. The door of communication is open for you today. Do not wait until it closes. The Most Merciful is waiting for you to knock — so knock, and you will find the door wide open.
