Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Anzarnākum — We have warned you.
  • ʿAdhāban qarīban — A punishment that is near at hand.
  • Yawma yanzuru al-mar'u — The Day when every person will look/see.
  • Mā qaddamat yadāhu — What his hands have sent forth (i.e., deeds done in life).
  • Yā laytanī kuntu turāban — "Oh, would that I were dust!"

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this final verse of Surah An-Naba', Allah addresses all of humanity with a profound and urgent warning: "Indeed, We have warned you of a punishment that is near." Though the Day of Judgment may seem distant to us, in the sight of Allah, everything that is coming is close — for the Hereafter is inevitable, and every breath we take brings us nearer to it. This is not a distant threat but a reality that is approaching swiftly, whether we realize it or not.

The verse then describes that terrifying Day: "The Day when every person will see what his hands have sent forth." On that Day, nothing will be hidden. Every deed — whether a word of kindness, an act of charity, a moment of patience, or a sin committed in secret — will be laid bare before its owner. The good will shine like a light, and the evil will appear in its full ugliness. There will be no denial, no excuse, and no escape. Each soul will face the exact record of its life, and the scales of justice will be perfectly balanced.

Then comes the most heart-wrenching scene: "And the disbeliever will say, 'Oh, would that I were dust!'" When the disbeliever witnesses the horrors of that Day and the punishment that awaits him, he will wish for absolute non-existence. He will envy even the animals, for on that Day, Allah will command all creatures — including the beasts of the earth — to become dust. Only humans and jinn will remain for judgment. So the disbeliever will cry out in utter despair: "If only I had been dust — if only I had never been created, or had been among the animals that were turned to dust — then I would not be standing here facing this reckoning!"

This wish is not merely an emotional outburst; it is the ultimate expression of regret and hopelessness. A person who once rejected the truth, mocked the messengers, and lived in arrogance will now wish for the lowest possible state — to be dust — just to escape the consequences of his choices.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse is a mercy from Allah before it is a warning. He is telling us now, in this life, so that we may never have to utter that cry of regret on the Day when regret will be of no avail. The One who created you, who gave you life, guidance, and countless blessings, does not wish to see you in that state. He has sent His messengers, revealed His books, and given you countless opportunities to turn back to Him.

Today, you still have time. Today, you can be among those whose hands have sent forth good deeds — prayers, charity, kindness to parents, honesty in business, and forgiveness toward others. Today, you can choose to be among those who will see their good deeds shining before them on that Day, and who will be welcomed into gardens beneath which rivers flow.

Do not wait until you see the reality with your own eyes, for then it will be too late. The Quran is not a book of stories; it is a living message to your heart. Let this warning move you to action. Let it fill your heart with hope in Allah's mercy and fear of His justice — for these two feelings together are the secret of a successful life and a peaceful hereafter.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "The intelligent person is the one who holds himself accountable and works for what comes after death." Be that intelligent person today. Do not let the moment pass, for the Hereafter is nearer to you than you think.

📜 Verse 38-40 — An-Naba

The Day that the Spirit and the angels will stand in rows, they will not speak except for one whom the Most Merciful permits, and he will say what is correct.
39ذَٰلِكَ الْيَوْمُ الْحَقُّ ۖ فَمَن شَاءَ اتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِ مَآبًا
That is the True Day; so he who wills may take to his Lord a [way of] return.
Indeed, We have warned you of a near punishment on the Day when a man will observe what his hands have put forth and the disbeliever will say, "Oh, I wish that I were dust!"
