Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- شَاقُّوا (Shaaqqu): They opposed, resisted, and acted in hostility against Allah and His Messenger. It implies taking a path contrary to that of Allah and His Messenger, engaging in enmity and defiance.
- شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ (Shadeed al-'Iqab): Severe in punishment — His retribution is mighty, overwhelming, and inescapable.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse comes as a powerful explanation of what befell the disbelievers at the Battle of Badr, where their heads, necks, and limbs were struck down. The punishment they received in this world was not arbitrary or unjust — it was the direct consequence of their own actions. They had opposed Allah and His Messenger, refusing to submit to His commands and rejecting the guidance that was sent to them. They did not follow what they were ordered to do, nor did they abstain from what they were forbidden from doing. Instead, they chose the path of defiance, arguing against the truth and turning away from the religion of Allah.
The verse then delivers a universal warning: whoever opposes Allah and His Messenger — whoever takes a path contrary to His commands and His Messenger's teachings — should know that Allah's punishment is severe. This punishment manifests in this world through defeat, humiliation, and loss, and in the Hereafter through the fire of Hell, which is the ultimate and everlasting torment.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on the justice of Allah. He does not punish except after clear warning, and He does not take anyone to task except for their own choices. The disbelievers of Badr were given every opportunity to accept the truth, yet they chose arrogance and hostility — and they faced the consequence. This verse is not merely a historical account; it is a living reminder for every generation. It calls us to examine our own relationship with Allah and His Messenger. Are we walking in obedience, or are we drifting into opposition? The door of repentance is open, and the mercy of Allah is vast. Do not let hardness of heart lead you to the path of those who opposed the truth. Embrace submission to Allah, follow the guidance of His Messenger, and you will find peace in this life and safety in the next. For indeed, Allah is severe in punishment — but He is also the Most Merciful, the Most Forgiving, and He loves those who turn back to Him.
