Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah calls upon the believers to remember this profound scene from the Battle of Badr — a moment that reveals the true nature of Satan and his empty promises. When the polytheists of Quraysh marched out with arrogance and pride, determined to fight the Muslims, Satan came to them and made their evil intentions appear virtuous in their eyes. He whispered to them, "No one can defeat you today, for I am your protector and ally." He filled their hearts with false confidence, making them believe that their strength, numbers, and preparations guaranteed victory.
But when the two armies stood face to face — the small, ill-equipped band of believers facing the mighty, well-armed force of disbelief — something remarkable happened. The moment Satan saw the angels descending from heaven to support the believers, he was seized with terror. He immediately turned on his heels and fled, abandoning those he had just promised to protect. He cried out to the polytheists, "I am completely free of you! I see what you cannot see — I see the angels of Allah coming to support the believers. I fear Allah, and His punishment is severe."
What a powerful lesson this is for every believer! Satan is the ultimate deceiver. He beautifies sin, encourages rebellion, and promises victory and success — but when the moment of truth arrives, he abandons his followers in their darkest hour. He cannot protect anyone, for he himself is weak and powerless before the might of Allah.
This verse also carries a beautiful reminder of Allah's care for His believing servants. When the believers faced an enemy three times their size, Allah did not leave them alone — He sent His angels to strengthen them and to terrify their enemies. The same Allah who supported the believers at Badr is with you today. When you stand firm in faith, when you obey His commands, He will never abandon you.
And notice how Satan, despite all his arrogance and promises, was terrified of Allah's punishment. He knows the reality of Allah's severe retribution, yet he continues to mislead people until the very end. How foolish then are those who follow him! They trade the protection of the Most Merciful for the empty promises of the most deceitful creature.
This verse invites you, dear reader, to reflect: Whose side are you on? Are you with those who place their trust in Allah and receive His divine support, or with those who follow Satan only to be abandoned when they need him most? The choice is clear, and the outcome is certain — Allah's help is with the believers, and His punishment is severe against those who persist in disobedience without sincere repentance.
