Word Meanings:

  • Yazzakkā (يَزَّكَّىٰ): To purify oneself, to cleanse one's soul from the filth of disbelief and sin, to grow in righteousness and virtue through faith and good deeds.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse addresses the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in a gentle, reassuring tone, following the divine rebuke mentioned in the preceding verses. Allah is comforting His Messenger and clarifying the reality of his mission. The verse asks: "And what is upon you if he does not purify himself?" — meaning, what harm or burden falls upon you, O Prophet, if that wealthy, self-sufficient man (referring to the one who turned away from the Prophet's call while he was busy guiding a blind believer) refuses to cleanse his soul from the filth of disbelief and sin through sincere repentance to Allah?

The meaning is profound: The Prophet's duty is only to convey the message clearly and sincerely. He is not responsible for people's acceptance or rejection of it. If a person chooses to remain in a state of spiritual impurity — refusing to purify his heart through faith, repentance, and obedience — then the consequences of that choice rest entirely upon that person, not upon the one who delivered the truth. The Prophet bears no sin, no burden, and no responsibility for the unbelief of those who turn away.

This verse also subtly highlights a beautiful principle: the value of a person is not measured by their wealth, status, or self-sufficiency, but by the purity of their soul and their openness to guidance. The one who comes seeking purification, even if poor and blind, is far more beloved to Allah than the one who is rich and self-satisfied yet turns away from the truth.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this verse carries a timeless lesson for every Muslim and every seeker of truth. It reminds us that the door of purification is always open — the door of tawbah (repentance), the door of iman (faith), and the door of righteous action. No matter how far one has strayed, the opportunity to cleanse one's heart and soul remains available until the moment of death. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was sent as a mercy to all of humanity, and his message continues to reach us today through the Qur'an and his noble Sunnah.

Do not let pride, wealth, or worldly distractions prevent you from purifying your soul. The most honored among you in the sight of Allah is the one who is most righteous (Qur'an 49:13). Take a moment today to reflect: Is your heart in need of purification? Are there sins weighing you down? Turn to Allah in sincere repentance, for He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful. He loves those who purify themselves, and He has promised Paradise to those who cleanse their souls and grow in faith. This is the path to true success — in this life and in the Hereafter.

📜 Verse 5-9 — 'Abasa

5أَمَّا مَنِ اسْتَغْنَىٰ
As for he who thinks himself without need,
6فَأَنتَ لَهُ تَصَدَّىٰ
To him you give attention.
7وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ
And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified.
8وَأَمَّا مَن جَاءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ
But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge]
9وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ
While he fears [Allah],
