Word Meanings:
- Aflaha (أَفْلَحَ): Succeeded, attained victory, and achieved the desired goal.
- Tazakkā (تَزَكَّىٰ): Purified oneself; cleansed the soul from spiritual and moral impurities.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse declares a profound and universal truth: true success—the ultimate victory that every soul yearns for—belongs exclusively to the one who purifies themselves. The purification (tazkiyah) mentioned here encompasses both the inner and outer dimensions of a person. It means cleansing one's heart from the filth of shirk (associating partners with Allah) and the darkness of sin, and adorning one's character with sincerity, faith, and obedience to Allah.
The one who purifies their soul does so by embracing pure monotheism, turning to Allah in sincere repentance, and striving to live a life that pleases Him. This includes remembering Allah constantly, calling upon Him with humility, and establishing the prescribed prayers at their proper times—all as acts of devotion seeking His pleasure and following His divine command.
When a person undertakes this purification, they are not merely performing rituals; they are transforming their entire being. They free themselves from the heavy burdens of sin and the shackles of worldly distractions, and they draw closer to the One who created them. This is the path to true felicity—a success that transcends this temporary world and secures everlasting bliss in the Hereafter.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and ask yourself: what is the definition of true success in your life? Is it wealth, status, or fleeting pleasures? Allah, in His infinite mercy, tells us that real success lies in purifying the soul. It is a success that brings peace to the heart, light to the path, and eternal joy in the presence of the Most Merciful. The door of purification is open to everyone—no matter how far one has strayed, sincere repentance and the intention to change can begin right now. Take that step today, and you will taste a sweetness of faith that no worldly treasure can ever match.
