Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Sūrah: A chapter of the Qur'an revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
  • Yanẓaru baʿḍuhum ilā baʿḍ: They exchange glances with one another, signaling with their eyes.
  • Ṣarafa Allāhu qulūbahum: Allah turned their hearts away (from guidance) as a punishment for their hypocrisy.

Tafsir (Explanation):

When a chapter of the Qur'an is revealed—especially one that exposes the traits and hidden deeds of the hypocrites—they begin to look at one another with meaningful glances, as if to say, "Does anyone see us? Can we slip away unnoticed?" If they think no one is watching, they quietly leave the gathering of the Prophet (peace be upon him), fleeing from the truth that pierces their hearts and exposes their inner corruption. They are terrified of being recognized for what they truly are.

This behavior is a manifestation of their deep-seated hypocrisy. Instead of listening to the words of Allah with humility and reflection, they react with evasion and mockery. Their sole concern is saving face before the believers, not seeking guidance. Consequently, Allah turned their hearts away from every form of goodness and deprived them of the ability to comprehend the truth. This is a just recompense for a people who refuse to use their intellect and hearts to understand the revelation—they hear it but do not truly listen, they see it but do not truly perceive.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, see how the hypocrites fled from the Qur'an, while the true believers rush to it with open hearts and eager minds. The Qur'an is a light that illuminates the path of those who seek it sincerely, but it becomes a burden and a source of discomfort for those who carry hypocrisy in their chests. Let this be a lesson for us all: approach the Book of Allah with humility, sincerity, and a desire to understand. For when the heart is pure, every verse becomes a guide, a mercy, and a source of strength. Do not be like those who turn away—be among those who draw closer, for Allah promises guidance to those who strive in His path. The door of repentance is always open, and His mercy encompasses all who seek it with a truthful heart.

📜 Verse 125-129 — At-Tawbah

But as for those in whose hearts is disease, it has [only] increased them in evil [in addition] to their evil. And they will have died while they are disbelievers.
Do they not see that they are tried every year once or twice but then they do not repent nor do they remember?
And whenever a surah is revealed, they look at each other, [saying], "Does anyone see you?" and then they dismiss themselves. Allah has dismissed their hearts because they are a people who do not understand.
There has certainly come to you a Messenger from among yourselves. Grievous to him is what you suffer; [he is] concerned over you and to the believers is kind and merciful.
But if they turn away, [O Muhammad], say, "Sufficient for me is Allah; there is no deity except Him. On Him I have relied, and He is the Lord of the Great Throne."
