Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Sa'yakum (سَعْيَكُمْ): Your striving, effort, or deeds — encompassing all actions and endeavors in life.
- Shattā (شَتَّىٰ): Diverse, varied, or scattered — derived from the root meaning "different" or "separate," indicating a wide disparity and divergence.
Explanation of the Verse:
After Allah Almighty swears by the night when it covers the earth with its darkness, by the day when it shines forth with its light, and by the creation of the two genders — male and female — He declares the central truth of this verse: "Indeed, your striving is truly diverse."
This means that the efforts and deeds of people are not all the same; rather, they are profoundly varied and divergent. Some people strive for the good of this world alone, chasing after wealth, status, and fleeting pleasures. Others strive for the Hereafter, seeking Allah's pleasure through righteous deeds, worship, and service to humanity. And some combine both — working for the world while keeping the Hereafter as their ultimate goal.
The diversity here is not merely in the types of work people do, but in the moral and spiritual direction of their efforts. Some deeds are good and pleasing to Allah, leading to Paradise, while others are evil and incur His displeasure, leading to the Fire. Your actions are scattered across a spectrum — some align with divine pleasure, others with divine wrath.
This verse serves as a profound reminder that life is a field of endeavor, and every soul is moving in a direction. The difference between people lies not in their outward circumstances but in the nature and intention of their striving. The one who strives for Allah's pleasure will find a path of ease and success, while the one who turns away will face hardship and loss.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect: What is the direction of your striving? Are your daily efforts building a legacy that pleases Allah, or are they consumed by the temporary attractions of this world? The verse invites you to examine your own "sa'y" — your work, your intentions, your goals — and to realign them toward what truly matters. Allah has made the path clear, and He has promised that whoever gives in charity, fears Him, and believes in the best reward, He will ease them toward the path of ease. Let this verse be a turning point — a moment where you choose to make your striving one that leads to eternal success. The doors of mercy are open, and every new day is a new opportunity to redirect your efforts toward what pleases your Lord.
