Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Wa mā (وَمَا): Here, it means "and by Him Who created" — an oath by the Creator Himself, not merely by the creation.
  • Al-dhakar (الذَّكَرَ): The male — referring to the male of every species, with Adam (peace be upon him) as the foremost example.
  • Al-unthā (الْأُنثَىٰ): The female — referring to the female of every species, with Hawwa’ (Eve) as the foremost example.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) swears by His own act of creation — the creation of the two complementary sexes: the male and the female. This is a profound oath that points to the magnificent wisdom and power of the Creator, Who fashioned every living being in pairs, from the greatest to the smallest. The verse specifically highlights Adam and Hawwa’ as the origin of humanity, but the meaning extends to all creatures that exist in pairs, male and female.

This oath draws the listener’s attention to the perfect balance and order in Allah’s creation. The existence of two sexes — with their distinct roles, physical forms, and complementary natures — is a sign of Allah’s absolute wisdom and His perfect design. It is He Who determines who is male and who is female, and this diversity is not random but purposeful, reflecting His mercy and His plan for the continuation of life on earth.

By swearing by this profound reality, Allah prepares the heart to receive the message that follows: that human deeds are indeed varied and different — some strive for the worldly life, while others strive for the Hereafter. Just as the creation of male and female is a deliberate act of divine wisdom, so too is the accountability for one’s deeds a deliberate part of Allah’s justice.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this magnificent sign. The creation of male and female — with all the harmony, love, and mercy placed between them — is a living testimony to the greatness of Allah. It is He Who created you in the best of forms, and it is He Who will judge your deeds with perfect fairness. Let this awareness fill your heart with gratitude and motivate you to align your actions with what pleases your Creator. For just as He created you in pairs, He has also created for you a path to success — a path of faith, righteousness, and sincere devotion. Walk it with confidence, for the One Who created you knows exactly what is best for you and has promised His faithful servants a reward beyond imagination.

By the night when it covers
And [by] the day when it appears
And [by] He who created the male and female,
Indeed, your efforts are diverse.
As for he who gives and fears Allah
