Word Meanings:

  • Kalla (كَلَّا): A strong Arabic particle of rebuke and denial, meaning "No indeed!" or "Absolutely not!" It is used to strongly reject and refute what was previously said or done.
  • Al-Insan (الْإِنسَانَ): The human being, specifically referring here to the arrogant and transgressing type of person, as exemplified by Abu Jahl.
  • Yatgha (يَطْغَىٰ): To transgress, exceed all bounds, become insolent, and overstep the limits set by Allah.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse delivers a decisive and powerful rebuke to those who display arrogance and transgression. After the previous verses mentioned the servant of Allah (the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him) praying, Abu Jahl—that arrogant tyrant—threatened and tried to prevent him. So Allah responds with a firm "Kalla!"—an emphatic denial of Abu Jahl's attitude and actions.

Allah then declares that the human being, when he becomes self-sufficient and is blessed with wealth and power, tends to become insolent and transgresses the boundaries set by his Lord. He forgets his humble origins, feels no need for his Creator, and begins to oppress others and reject the truth. This is a universal human flaw: prosperity often breeds arrogance, and comfort often leads to rebellion against divine guidance.

However, this verse is not merely a description—it is a profound warning. Every tyrant who exceeds the limits of Allah must know that his ultimate return is to his Lord, who will hold him fully accountable for his deeds. No amount of wealth, power, or status will protect him on that Day. The One who created him from a clinging clot (as mentioned in the previous verses) is fully capable of bringing him back and recompensing him with perfect justice.

A Call to Reflection and Righteousness:

Dear reader, let this verse be a mirror for your own soul. How often do we, when blessed with wealth, knowledge, or position, begin to feel self-sufficient and look down upon others? How often does success make us forget the One who granted it? The Quran teaches us that true nobility lies not in arrogance but in humility before Allah and compassion toward His creation. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "No one who has an atom's weight of pride in his heart will enter Paradise." So guard your heart against the disease of arrogance, and remember that every blessing you possess is a trust from Allah—use it to draw closer to Him, not to transgress against His limits. For the One who created you from a mere drop of fluid is more than able to bring you back, and His justice is absolute. Let humility be your adornment, and let gratitude be your constant companion, for that is the path to true success in this life and the next.
