Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • عَلَّمَ (ʿAllama): He taught — conveying knowledge and skill to another.
  • الْإِنسَانَ (al-insān): The human being — referring to all of humanity, as a species.
  • مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ (mā lam yaʿlam): What he did not know — that which was previously unknown to him.

Explanation of the Verse:

After mentioning the pen and the act of writing, Allah continues by saying that He taught the human being what he did not know. This is a profound statement of divine grace and generosity. The verse refers to all of humanity — Allah has taught every person, across all generations, the knowledge they needed for their welfare, their crafts, their sciences, and their way of life. From the simplest skills like farming and building, to the most complex sciences of medicine, astronomy, and technology — all of it is a gift from Allah, the Most Generous.

This teaching is not limited to one era or one people. It is a continuous blessing: Allah taught the first human being, Adam, the names of all things, and He continues to teach His creation through revelation, through inspiration, through the natural curiosity He placed within us, and through the means of learning He provided. The human being was born knowing nothing — not even how to speak or feed himself — yet through Allah's mercy, he was guided step by step from the darkness of ignorance to the light of knowledge.

This verse also carries a beautiful reminder: all knowledge ultimately comes from Allah. Whether it is the knowledge of the Qur'an and religion, or the knowledge of worldly matters and sciences, the source is the same — the Creator who is "the Most Generous" (al-Akram). When a person learns something new, it is a moment to recognize Allah's favor and to feel gratitude toward Him.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse is a powerful invitation to reflect on the miracle of knowledge itself. Think about it: you, as a human being, were once completely unaware — you knew nothing. Yet today, you can read, write, reason, and understand. Who gave you this ability? Who opened the doors of learning for you? It is Allah, the Most Generous, who did not leave you in ignorance but honored you with the gift of knowledge.

Islam is a religion that elevates knowledge and honors those who seek it. The very first command revealed in the Qur'an was "Read!" — and this verse confirms that the One who commands us to read is the One who has taught us everything we know. So let this be an encouragement: never stop learning, never stop seeking knowledge, and always remember that every step you take in learning is a step closer to appreciating the greatness of your Lord. And when you learn something new, let it increase you in humility and gratitude — for it is Allah who taught you what you did not know.
