Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Wa'd (الوعد): The promise — referring to the promise of the Hour, the Day of Resurrection, and the punishment that awaits the disbelievers.
- Sādiqīn (صادقين): Truthful — those who speak the truth and whose words are confirmed by reality.
Explanation of the Verse:
The disbelievers, in their arrogance and mockery, repeatedly ask the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the believers: "When will this promise come to pass — the promise of the Hour and the punishment you warn us about — if you are truly truthful in what you claim?"
This question was not posed out of genuine curiosity or a sincere desire to know the truth. Rather, it was a taunt, a challenge, and an expression of denial. They said this while turning away from the signs of Allah that surrounded them — the creation of the heavens and the earth, the alternation of night and day, and the countless blessings they enjoyed. They demanded an immediate fulfillment of a matter whose timing Allah alone knows, as if to say: "If you are truthful, bring us the punishment now!"
The verse highlights a recurring trait of those who reject the truth: they rush to mock what they do not comprehend, and they demand immediate proof for matters that are bound by divine wisdom and timing. The Hour is a matter of the unseen, and its precise timing is known only to Allah. The role of the messengers is to warn and to convey the message clearly, not to dictate when Allah's decree will unfold.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, reflect on this scene. The disbelievers of Makkah asked this question with arrogance, yet the answer was always with them — in the signs of creation, in the truth of the revelation, and in the justice of the Creator. The One who created the heavens and the earth without pillars, who brings forth the living from the dead and the dead from the living, is certainly capable of raising all of humanity for a Day of Reckoning.
The promise of Allah is certain. The Hour will come, whether the mockers believe it or not. But the wise one is he who prepares for that Day before it arrives, who responds to the call of truth with sincerity and submission, and who does not waste his life in denial and ridicule.
Do not be like those who demanded signs while ignoring the greatest sign of all: the Qur'an itself, a book that guides to that which is most upright, and which calls you to a life of peace, justice, and closeness to your Creator. Embrace the truth before the Hour comes upon you suddenly, and you find yourself among those who wished they had believed.
