Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

We have placed our trust and reliance entirely upon Allah.
A trial, test, or cause of deviation; here it means being subjected to persecution or becoming a reason for others to stray.
The wrongdoers, the oppressors.

Tafsir (Explanation):

When Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) called upon his people to put their trust in Allah alone after Pharaoh’s threats and intimidation, the believers among his followers responded with a profound declaration of faith. They said: *"Upon Allah we have placed our trust"* — meaning, we rely on Him alone, we submit our affairs to Him, and we seek no support except from Him. This was not a mere statement of words; it was the heartfelt conviction of sincere believers who had purified their faith and recognized that no power, no tyrant, and no force on earth can overcome those who truly depend on their Lord.

Then they turned to Allah in humble supplication, saying: *"Our Lord, do not make us a trial for the wrongdoing people."* This dua carries two beautiful and profound meanings:

First, they pleaded with Allah not to give the oppressors power over them in a way that would lead the believers to be tortured, killed, or seduced away from their religion — for such trials could weaken their faith or cause them to falter under pressure.

Second, they asked Allah not to let their defeat or suffering become a source of doubt for others. If the disbelievers were to triumph over them, the oppressors might say: *"Had these people been upon the truth, they would not have been defeated."* This would only increase the tyrants in their arrogance and transgression, and it would mislead those who look on from the outside.

So the believers were not only concerned for their own safety — they were also concerned for the honor of the truth and the preservation of people’s guidance. They understood that their victory was not merely a personal matter, but a sign of Allah’s support for His religion.

This verse teaches us a timeless lesson: true trust in Allah (tawakkul) is not passive resignation — it is active reliance combined with sincere supplication. The believers did not merely say "we trust Allah" and then sit idle; they prayed, they prepared, and they turned to their Lord with humility, asking Him to protect their faith and to keep them firm.

Dear reader, when you face trials in your life — whether from oppressors, from hardship, or from the whispers of doubt — remember this beautiful example. Place your trust in Allah, for He is the Best of protectors. And make dua to Him, for He loves to hear His servants call upon Him. Know that no trial befalls you except that Allah has a wisdom in it, and no matter how dark the night may seem, the dawn of His help is near for those who remain patient and reliant upon Him.

📜 Verse 83-87 — Yunus

But no one believed Moses, except [some] youths among his people, for fear of Pharaoh and his establishment that they would persecute them. And indeed, Pharaoh was haughty within the land, and indeed, he was of the transgressors
And Moses said, "O my people, if you have believed in Allah, then rely upon Him, if you should be Muslims."
So they said, "Upon Allah do we rely. Our Lord, make us not [objects of] trial for the wrongdoing people
And save us by Your mercy from the disbelieving people."
And We inspired to Moses and his brother, "Settle your people in Egypt in houses and make your houses [facing the] qiblah and establish prayer and give good tidings to the believers."
