Meanings of Key Words:

  • Al-'Asr (الْعَصْرِ): This refers to time or a specific period. It has been interpreted as the passage of time (the ages), or more specifically, the afternoon time — the period from midday (after the sun passes its zenith) until sunset.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah, the Almighty, begins this short yet profound chapter with an oath by time itself — by the passing of the ages and the fleeting hours of the day, especially the late afternoon when the sun begins its decline toward the horizon. This is a powerful reminder that time is one of the greatest blessings and proofs of Allah’s wisdom. By swearing by time, Allah draws our attention to the fact that human life is but a series of moments slipping away, and that every breath is a treasure that cannot be reclaimed.

The oath here is not merely rhetorical; it carries a deep lesson. Time is the vessel of all human deeds — every action, word, and thought occurs within its bounds. By highlighting the afternoon specifically, scholars have noted that it symbolizes the end of the day, much like the end of one's life, urging the believer to reflect on what remains before the final sunset. It is a call to wakefulness: do not let your hours pass in heedlessness, for they are the very currency of your existence.

It is important to note that while Allah swears by His creation to draw attention to its significance, no human being is permitted to swear by anything other than Allah. Swearing by other than Allah — whether by time, by one's honor, or by any created thing — is a form of associating partners with Him and is strictly forbidden in Islam. The believer's oath should always be by Allah alone, or simply speak truthfully without swearing.

This verse sets the stage for the rest of the surah, which reveals the purpose of this emphasis on time: humanity is in a state of loss, except for those who combine faith with righteous action, mutual encouragement of truth, and mutual encouragement of patience. The oath thus serves as a divine wake-up call, inviting every soul to examine how it invests its fleeting moments before they vanish forever.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, ponder this: Allah — the Creator of the heavens and the earth, the Owner of all that exists — chose to swear by time. Why? Because time is the one resource given equally to every human being, rich or poor, young or old. Yet it is the most neglected and wasted. Every day, the sun rises and sets, and with each cycle, a part of your life is written into history — never to return. This oath is a loving call from your Lord: "Do not let your days slip by without purpose. Seize this moment to turn to Me, to do good, to help others, and to prepare for the meeting with Me." Islam is not a religion of idle wishes; it is a religion of action, of making every second count for eternity. Let this verse inspire you to look at your watch and ask: "What have I done with the hours I have been given?" The answer can change your life forever.

1وَالْعَصْرِ
By time,
2إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لَفِي خُسْرٍ
Indeed, mankind is in loss,
3إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ
Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.
