Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Al-Insan (الإنسان): Refers to mankind in general, encompassing all of humanity.
- La-fi khusr (لَفِي خُسْر): "Certainly in loss" — meaning ruin, depletion, and a state of progressive decline and damage.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) swears by time itself — by the passing ages and moments of human existence — that every human being is indeed in a state of loss and ruin. This is not merely a casual observation; it is a divine oath affirming a universal truth: that all of humanity, left to their own devices without guidance, is heading toward destruction and deficiency.
The word "khusr" (loss) here signifies a deep and comprehensive loss — the wasting of one's life, health, opportunities, and ultimately one's soul. Every breath that passes without being invested in what pleases Allah is a breath lost. Every moment spent in heedlessness is a moment of capital depletion. The verse paints a stark picture: the human being, by default, is a merchant whose trade is failing unless he or she engages in the specific investments that the following verses will clarify.
Importantly, this verse refers to the general state of humankind — particularly those who live without faith and righteous action. The exception that follows in the next verse makes this clear: those who believe, do righteous deeds, enjoin truth, and enjoin patience are excluded from this loss. Thus, the verse serves as both a warning and a gentle invitation — a wake-up call to every soul to examine the state of their "account" before it is too late.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, pause for a moment and reflect: your life is a precious capital, and time is its currency. Every day you wake up, you are given a fresh deposit of hours and minutes. The question is: are you investing them wisely, or are they slipping through your fingers like sand?
This verse is not meant to despair you, but to awaken you. It tells you the truth about the default state of neglect — so that you may rise above it. The door of salvation is wide open, and the very next verses will show you the path: faith, righteous action, truth, and patience. These are the four pillars of success that transform a life of loss into a life of eternal gain.
So let this verse be a turning point. Let every moment from now on be a conscious investment in what pleases your Lord. For the one who realizes the loss and rushes to repair it is the true winner — and the mercy of Allah is vast, ready to embrace every sincere soul who turns back to Him.
