Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- لَا يَحُضُّ — does not urge, encourage, or prompt (himself or others).
- طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِينِ — feeding the poor and needy; providing food for the destitute.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse describes a characteristic of those who deny the Day of Judgment and reject the truth: they do not urge themselves or others to feed the poor and needy. The wording is significant — it does not merely say "they do not feed the poor," but rather "they do not even encourage feeding the poor." This indicates an extreme hardness of heart. If they do not even speak a word of encouragement to others to help the needy, then it is even less likely that they would feed the poor themselves. The verse highlights that such a person is so consumed by selfishness and neglect of Allah’s rights that they show no compassion toward His creation, especially the weak and vulnerable.
The verse also implies a broader lesson: urging others to do good is itself a form of charity and a duty upon every believer. When a person cannot help financially, they should at least encourage others to do so. The one who abandons this entirely reveals a heart devoid of mercy and a soul disconnected from the spirit of faith.
Da‘wah Reflection:
Dear reader, this verse gently awakens our conscience. Islam is not merely a religion of rituals — it is a religion of mercy in action. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "He is not a believer who eats his fill while his neighbor goes hungry." Imagine the beauty of a community where everyone cares for everyone — where the rich remember the poor, and the poor find dignity and support. This verse invites you to be a source of goodness: if you cannot give, then at least encourage others to give. A single word of encouragement to help a hungry person can be a seed of immense reward. Let your heart soften, let your tongue speak good, and let your hand extend in kindness. For Allah loves those who care for His creation, and He has promised great reward for even a date given in charity. Do not be among those who turn away from the needy — be among those who bring hope and relief to the broken-hearted.
