Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Sijjil (سِجِّيل): Hardened baked clay — stones made of solid, petrified mud that had been intensely heated until it became like rock.
  • Mandood (مَّنضُود): Arranged in layers, stacked one upon another in a continuous, orderly sequence — following in succession without interruption.

Tafsir (Explanation):

When the command of Allah came — the decree of punishment that had been sealed for the people of Lut — the scene of divine justice unfolded in a manner that strikes awe into every heart. Allah raised the very towns in which these transgressors lived, lifting them up to the heavens, and then flipped them completely upside down, so that their highest parts became their lowest. The earth itself was turned against them, and then came the rain — not a rain of mercy, but a rain of stones made of hardened, baked clay, stacked and following one after another in relentless succession.

These stones were not ordinary rocks from the earth. They were marked by Allah with a special sign, distinct from anything found on the ground, and they pelted the people of Lut from every direction. Those who were inside the cities perished in the great overturning, and those who were outside were struck by this terrifying rain of stones. Nothing escaped — no corner, no shelter, no escape route. The punishment was comprehensive, absolute, and inescapable.

This verse carries a profound lesson for all of humanity, across every time and place. The destruction of the people of Lut was not merely a historical event confined to the past — it stands as a timeless warning. The Qur'an reminds us that what Allah did to them, He is fully capable of doing to any people who persist in transgression and defiance. The same power that flipped their cities upside down and rained stones upon them is the power that sustains the heavens and the earth today.

For the believer, this is a call to reflect deeply on the reality of divine justice. No sin is hidden from Allah, and no transgression goes unnoticed. But alongside this warning lies the beautiful truth of Allah's mercy — He does not punish until the proof has been established, until the message has been delivered, and until the sinner has been given every opportunity to repent. The people of Lut were warned repeatedly by their Prophet, yet they persisted in their arrogance and immorality.

So let every soul take heed: the door of repentance is open, but it will not remain open forever. When the command of Allah comes, no power on earth can delay it or reverse it. The wise person is the one who turns back to Allah before that moment arrives, who abandons sin while there is still time, and who seeks refuge in His mercy before His justice becomes inevitable. Indeed, Allah is swift in reckoning, but He is also the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful — and He loves those who turn to Him in sincere repentance.

📜 Verse 80-84 — Hud

He said, "If only I had against you some power or could take refuge in a strong support."
The angels said, "O Lot, indeed we are messengers of your Lord; [therefore], they will never reach you. So set out with your family during a portion of the night and let not any among you look back - except your wife; indeed, she will be struck by that which strikes them. Indeed, their appointment is [for] the morning. Is not the morning near?"
So when Our command came, We made the highest part [of the city] its lowest and rained upon them stones of layered hard clay, [which were]
Marked from your Lord. And Allah 's punishment is not from the wrongdoers [very] far.
And to Madyan [We sent] their brother Shu'ayb. He said, "O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. And do not decrease from the measure and the scale. Indeed, I see you in prosperity, but indeed, I fear for you the punishment of an all-encompassing Day.
