Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Musawwamah (مُسَوَّمَةً): Marked or distinguished with a special sign.
- ʿInda Rabbika (عِندَ رَبِّكَ): With your Lord — meaning in His divine knowledge and treasured reserves.
- Min al-Ẓālimīna (مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ): From the wrongdoers — here referring to the polytheists of Quraysh and all who persist in oppression and transgression.
- Bibaʿīd (بِبَعِيدٍ): Far away — meaning distant in place or time.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues the account of the punishment that befell the people of Prophet Lot (peace be upon him). The stones that rained down upon them were not ordinary stones — they were marked with a special sign from your Lord, distinguished from all other stones on earth. Each stone was inscribed with the name of the person it was destined to strike, a divine precision that leaves no room for escape or error. These stones were stored in the treasuries of Allah’s knowledge and power, reserved specifically for that wicked people.
Then comes a profound and terrifying warning: "And they (these stones) are not far from the wrongdoers." This means that the very same punishment — or something similar — is not distant from the oppressors of every time and place, including the polytheists of Makkah who rejected the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and persecuted the believers. The stones that destroyed the people of Lot are still within Allah’s power, and He can unleash them upon any nation that persists in injustice and defiance.
This verse serves as a universal threat to every tyrant and sinner who rebels against Allah. It reminds us that divine justice is never far away — it may come in the form of stones from the sky, or through other means of punishment that Allah chooses. No oppressor, no matter how powerful or secure they feel, is beyond the reach of Allah’s retribution.
A Call to Reflection and Righteousness:
Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart. The same Allah who marked those stones with precision and power is alive today, watching over all creation. He knows every wrongdoer by name, and His justice is never delayed without wisdom. But He is also the Most Merciful — He gives us time to repent, to turn back to Him, and to correct our ways before His punishment arrives.
Do not be deceived by the apparent delay of punishment for those who oppress others or persist in sin. The stones are marked, the decree is written, and the hour of justice is near. But the door of repentance is wide open — so hasten to it before it is too late. Allah loves those who turn back to Him, and He replaces the threat of punishment with the promise of forgiveness and Paradise for those who believe and do righteous deeds.
Let this verse be a reminder that no one is beyond Allah’s reach — neither in punishment nor in mercy. Choose the path of righteousness, and you will find your Lord near, forgiving, and merciful.
