Surah Hud — Verse 89

• Shiqāqī (شِقَاقِي): My opposition, enmity, or disagreement with you — referring to the conflict between the prophet and his people due to their rejection of his message.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound verse, the Prophet Shuʿayb (peace be upon him) addresses his people with a heartfelt warning, calling them once again to reflection and repentance. He says: "O my people, do not let your hatred of me and your opposition to the message I bring lead you to persist in your disbelief and stubbornness, for if you do, you will bring upon yourselves a punishment like that which befell the nations before you."

He reminds them of three destroyed nations: the people of Noah, who were drowned in the great flood for their arrogance and rejection; the people of Hūd (the ʿĀd), who were destroyed by a furious, freezing wind for their tyranny and pride; and the people of Ṣāliḥ (the Thamūd), who were seized by a mighty blast and earthquake after they rejected the sign of the she-camel. These were not distant legends — they were recent history, and their ruins were still visible in the Arabian Peninsula.

Then Shuʿayb adds a striking point: "And the people of Lot are not far from you." The destroyed cities of Lot — Sodom and Gomorrah — lay on the very trade routes his people traveled, near the Dead Sea, close in both time and place. They had seen the remnants of that destruction with their own eyes, and they had heard the stories passed down through generations. This was not a vague threat; it was a tangible, witnessed reality.

The verse carries a powerful lesson: enmity and personal grudges should never blind a person to the truth. When we let our dislike of a person — or our pride — prevent us from accepting guidance, we are the ones who suffer the consequences. The punishment of Allah is not limited to ancient peoples; it is a living reality that can befall any generation that persists in transgression.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this verse speaks directly to the human heart across time. It teaches us that Allah's mercy is vast, but His justice is certain. The nations before us were not destroyed because they were weak or ignorant — many were powerful, wealthy, and advanced in their civilizations. Yet when they rejected the messengers and persisted in corruption, nothing could protect them.

The beauty of this warning is that it comes before the punishment — it is an invitation to change course. Shuʿayb did not curse his people; he pleaded with them out of love and concern. This is the essence of Islamic daʿwah: to call others to goodness with sincerity, patience, and compassion, even when faced with hostility.

Let us take heed from this verse in our own lives. Are there grudges we hold that prevent us from accepting truth? Are there habits of sin we cling to despite knowing their consequences? The door of repentance is always open, and Allah's mercy precedes His wrath. Do not let your pride be the rope that pulls you toward destruction — rather, let humility be the key that opens the gates of divine forgiveness.

The people of Lot were "not far" from Shuʿayb's people — and likewise, the lessons of history are never far from us. Every day we pass by signs of Allah's power and mercy. Let us not be among those who see but refuse to reflect, who hear but refuse to respond. The choice is ours: to learn from the past or to repeat its mistakes.
