Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- اسْتَغْفِرُوا (Istagfirū): Seek forgiveness, ask Allah to pardon your sins and cover them with His mercy.
- تُوبُوا (Tūbū): Turn back in repentance, abandon sins and return to obedience to Allah.
- وَدُود (Wadūd): Affectionate, Loving — a divine attribute indicating Allah’s profound love for His righteous servants and those who repent.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, the Prophet Shuʿayb (peace be upon him) calls his people — and by extension all believers — to the two essential steps of spiritual purification: seeking forgiveness and sincere repentance. He says: "Ask your Lord for forgiveness for the sins you have committed, then turn back to Him in genuine repentance, committing yourselves to His obedience and abandoning all that He has forbidden."
The order here is significant: first, one seeks forgiveness — a plea for Allah to erase past wrongdoings — and then one follows it with a firm resolve to change, turning the heart and actions toward Allah. This is not a mere verbal request; it is a transformative process that reshapes the soul and aligns one's life with divine guidance.
Then comes the most comforting reassurance: "Indeed, my Lord is Most Merciful, Most Loving." These two divine names — *Ar-Raḥīm* (the Merciful) and *Al-Wadūd* (the Loving) — open the doors of hope wide open. Allah's mercy is not limited or conditional upon perfection; rather, it embraces those who sincerely turn to Him. And His love is not distant or cold — it is an active, affectionate love that welcomes the repentant servant, cherishes his return, and showers him with grace.
This verse teaches us that no matter how great our sins may be, the mercy and love of Allah are greater. The moment a servant stretches out his hands in repentance, Allah stretches out His mercy to accept him. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Allah is more delighted with the repentance of His servant than a man who finds his lost camel in a barren desert" (agreed upon).
A Call to the Reader:
Dear reader, reflect on the beauty of this divine invitation. Your Lord — the Creator of the heavens and the earth — calls you to come back to Him, not because He needs you, but because He loves you and desires your success. He knows your weaknesses and your struggles, and yet He describes Himself as *Al-Wadūd* — the Loving One who delights in your return.
So do not despair of Allah's mercy, no matter how far you have strayed. The door of repentance is open until the sun rises from the west. Take this moment — right now — to utter *Astaghfirullah* (I seek Allah's forgiveness) from the depths of your heart, and resolve to walk the path of righteousness. For every step you take toward Him, He comes to you with even greater speed, as He promised in the sacred hadith: "Whoever draws near to Me by a handspan, I draw near to him by an arm's length; and whoever comes to Me walking, I come to him running."
This is the essence of Islam: a loving relationship with a Merciful Lord who never tires of forgiving His servants. Embrace it, and you will find peace in this life and eternal bliss in the Hereafter.
