Surah Hud — Verse 91

Explanation of the Verse:

The people of Shu'ayb (peace be upon him) responded to his sincere call with arrogance and contempt. They said: "O Shu'ayb, we do not understand much of what you are saying." This was not a confession of intellectual inability, but rather a dismissive statement born of pride and mockery. They belittled his message, refusing to engage with its wisdom because their hearts were sealed with stubbornness.

Then they added: "And indeed, we see you as weak among us." They looked down upon him because he did not hold a position of wealth, power, or tribal leadership in their society. In their eyes, strength was measured by worldly status, not by truth and righteousness. They failed to recognize that true strength lies in faith and moral integrity.

They continued: "Were it not for your clan, we would have stoned you." This reveals their violent intentions and utter disregard for human life. They were restrained only by tribal loyalty, because Shu'ayb's family followed their religion and held some social weight. It was not respect for him or his message that protected him—it was merely the fear of provoking his kinsmen.

Finally, they declared: "And you are not mighty over us." Meaning: You have no power, honor, or influence that would make us fear you or heed your words. They made it clear that his life was spared only due to his family connections, not because he had any standing in their eyes.

This verse paints a vivid picture of the arrogance of disbelief. The people of Shu'ayb rejected the truth not because it was unclear, but because they measured worth by worldly standards. They saw a prophet of Allah as weak and insignificant, while they considered themselves mighty and secure.

A Call to Reflection:

How often do we, too, judge people by their outward circumstances? How often do we dismiss a sincere reminder because the one delivering it does not hold a prestigious position? This verse teaches us a profound lesson: truth is not measured by the status of the one who speaks it, and honor is not found in wealth or power, but in righteousness and devotion to Allah.

The Prophet Shu'ayb remained patient and steadfast despite this harsh rejection. He did not waver in his mission, nor did he soften the truth to please his people. This is the character of the true believer—one who stands firm upon the truth, regardless of how the world perceives him.

Let us learn from this story to value people by their faith and character, not by their social standing. And let us remember that the most honored among us in the sight of Allah are those who are most righteous (Qur'an 49:13). May Allah grant us the wisdom to recognize the truth wherever it may be, and the courage to uphold it even when the world looks down upon us.
