Word Meanings:

  • رهطي (Rahti): My clan or close kinsfolk—the people of my tribe who supported me.
  • أعز (A‘azz): More powerful, more honored, or more revered.
  • ظهريًا (Dhihriyyan): Literally "behind your backs"—meaning something cast aside, neglected, and abandoned, like a thing thrown away that you no longer care to look at.
  • محيط (Muheet): Encompassing—completely surrounding and fully aware of everything, leaving nothing hidden or out of reach.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound moment, Prophet Shu‘ayb (peace be upon him) addresses his people with a tone of sorrowful astonishment and sharp rebuke. He says: "O my people! Is my clan more honored and more revered in your eyes than Allah Himself?" This is a rhetorical question that cuts to the very heart of their misguided priorities. They had threatened Shu‘ayb with the power and influence of his family, as if that could intimidate him or deter him from delivering the truth. But Shu‘ayb turns the tables on them with piercing logic: if they truly feared power and status, then why did they not fear Allah—the Creator of all power and the Owner of all status?

Then he exposes their deeper crime: they had taken Allah and cast Him behind their backs, like a worn-out garment thrown away in neglect. They did not heed His commands, nor did they pause at His prohibitions. They treated His revelation as something irrelevant to their daily lives—something to be ignored, mocked, or conveniently forgotten. This is the ultimate tragedy: to know of Allah, yet to treat Him as if He does not matter.

Finally, Shu‘ayb closes with a statement that is both a comfort to the believers and a terrifying warning to the disbelievers: "Indeed, my Lord encompasses all that you do." Nothing escapes His knowledge—not a single word, not a single glance, not a single intention hidden in the heart. He is fully aware of every plot, every threat, every act of arrogance and every moment of neglect. And because He encompasses all, He will surely bring every deed to account—in this world through His justice, and in the Hereafter through His perfect recompense.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and ask yourself: Have we, too, placed Allah behind our backs at times? Do we honor the opinions of people more than the commands of our Creator? Do we fear the criticism of society more than the gaze of Allah? This verse is a timeless reminder that no power on earth—no tribe, no wealth, no status—can ever compare to the might of Allah. When we truly internalize that He encompasses all our deeds, our priorities shift, our hearts soften, and our lives align with His pleasure. Let this be the moment you bring Allah to the forefront of your life, for He has never been far from you—He sees, He knows, and He is always near.

And O my people, work according to your position; indeed, I am working. You are going to know to whom will come a punishment that will disgrace him and who is a liar. So watch; indeed, I am with you a watcher, [awaiting the outcome]."
And when Our command came, We saved Shu'ayb and those who believed with him, by mercy from Us. And the shriek seized those who had wronged, and they became within their homes [corpses] fallen prone
