Tafsir (Explanation):
In this noble verse, Allah addresses His beloved Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) with a profound reassurance and honour. He declares: "We — with all Our majesty and power — narrate to you, O Messenger, the most excellent of stories." This is not merely any narration; it is a story that combines absolute truthfulness, eloquence, and wisdom, surpassing every other tale in its beauty and benefit. This excellence comes through the revelation of the Qur'an itself — the divine book that Allah sent down to you, containing the accounts of past nations, including the inspiring story of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph), peace be upon him.
Allah then reminds the Prophet that before this revelation, he was among those unaware of these events. He had no prior knowledge of Yusuf's story or the hidden wisdom within it. This highlights the miraculous nature of the Qur'an: the Prophet was unlettered, living in a society far removed from the historical records of earlier prophets, yet he received these detailed accounts with perfect accuracy through divine revelation alone.
This verse carries a powerful lesson for every believer: the Qur'an is a living miracle, a source of guidance that unveils the unseen and transforms hearts. When we engage with its stories, we are not merely reading history — we are receiving divine light that illuminates our path, strengthens our faith, and teaches us patience, trust in Allah, and the ultimate triumph of truth over falsehood. The story of Yusuf, which follows, is a treasure trove of lessons: the beauty of forgiveness, the power of steadfastness in the face of trials, and the certainty that Allah's plan always prevails. Let this verse inspire you to approach the Qur'an with reverence and reflection, for in its verses lies the key to a life of purpose and peace.
