Word Meanings:

  • Asma’ (أسماءً): Names or labels with no real substance behind them.
  • Sultan (سلطان): Authority, proof, or evidence.
  • Al-Hukm (الحكم): The judgment, command, and absolute authority.
  • Ad-Deen al-Qayyim (الدين القيم): The upright, straight, and unerring religion.

Explanation of the Verse:

Prophet Yusuf (Joseph), peace be upon him, addresses his two prison companions and all those who follow their misguided ways, declaring: "What you worship besides Allah is nothing but mere names—empty labels that you and your forefathers have invented and attached to objects or beings that have no divinity whatsoever. These names do not correspond to any reality of lordship or godhood. Allah has sent down no authority, proof, or revelation to support this naming. Your worship is built on nothing but inherited falsehood and baseless conjecture."

Then Yusuf establishes the fundamental truth: "Judgment belongs to none but Allah alone." He is the sole Ruler, the only One who commands and prohibits, and the only One worthy of worship. Allah has explicitly commanded that you worship none but Him—no idols, no celestial bodies, no human figures, no fabricated deities. This command to worship Allah alone is the essence of the upright religion—the straight path that has no deviation or crookedness. It is the religion of all the prophets from Adam to Muhammad, peace be upon them all.

Yet, despite the clarity of this truth, most people do not know it. They remain ignorant of the reality of Tawheed (monotheism), and so they stumble in their confusion, worshipping created things and turning away from the Creator. Their ignorance is not due to lack of evidence, but due to their refusal to reflect and their blind following of ancestors.

A Da’wah Reflection:

Dear reader, contemplate this profound statement from a prophet imprisoned in a dungeon. Even in the darkest circumstances, Yusuf was calling people to the light of truth. He stripped away the falsehood of his society with a single, powerful argument: you are worshipping nothing but names! Think about it—what do idols, statues, or even concepts like "fate" or "nature" truly offer you? They are labels without substance, names without power.

Islam invites you to worship the One who actually hears your prayers, answers your calls, provides your sustenance, and holds your life in His Hands. This is the upright religion—a faith that aligns with your natural disposition (fitrah) and gives your life meaning and purpose. Do not let the ignorance of the majority keep you from the truth. The majority once followed the falsehood of Yusuf's time, but the truth remained true. Seek knowledge, reflect on the signs of Allah around you, and answer the call of the One who created you. Your heart will find peace only in the remembrance of Allah, and your worship will be accepted only when directed to Him alone.

📜 Verse 38-42 — Yusuf

And I have followed the religion of my fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. And it was not for us to associate anything with Allah. That is from the favor of Allah upon us and upon the people, but most of the people are not grateful.
O [my] two companions of prison, are separate lords better or Allah, the One, the Prevailing?

O two companions of prison, as for one of you, he will give drink to his master of wine; but as for the other, he will be crucified, and the birds will eat from his head. The matter has been decreed about which you both inquire."
And he said to the one whom he knew would go free, "Mention me before your master." But Satan made him forget the mention [to] his master, and Joseph remained in prison several years.
