Word Meanings:

  • "Ya Sahibay al-Sijn" — "O my two companions of the prison": a respectful address to the two young men who were imprisoned with Prophet Yusuf (Joseph), peace be upon him.
  • "Arbabun mutafarriqoon" — "Separate lords": multiple deities, each worshipped independently, scattered and divided, with no unity or coherence.
  • "Al-Wahid" — "The One": Allah, who is unique in His essence, attributes, and actions, with no partner or associate.
  • "Al-Qahhar" — "The Subduer": The One who dominates and prevails over all creation, and before whose power everything submits and yields.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Prophet Yusuf, peace be upon him, turns to his two fellow prisoners with a profound and thought-provoking question, inviting them to reflect upon the truth with clarity and wisdom. He says: "O my two companions of the prison, are separate, scattered lords better, or Allah, the One, the Subduer?"

Yusuf, peace be upon him, presents this comparison in the most eloquent manner. On one side, he places the false objects of worship — deities that are many, divided, weak, and incapable of bringing benefit or harm. These "lords" are mere creations, unable to manage even a speck of the universe, let alone answer prayers or control destiny. They are scattered and disconnected, each with no power over anything.

On the other side, he presents the truth: Allah, the One who is unique in His divinity, the only One worthy of worship, who has no partner or equal. He is Al-Qahhar — the Subduer who overcomes everything, and nothing can overcome Him. His power is absolute, His will is unstoppable, and His dominion encompasses all that exists.

With this powerful rhetorical question, Yusuf, peace be upon him, was not merely engaging in intellectual debate — he was calling them to the pure faith of Islam, the worship of the One True God. He used the very environment of the prison as a platform for da'wah (calling to Allah), showing that no circumstance should prevent a believer from inviting others to the truth.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this beautiful question that Yusuf, peace be upon him, posed to his companions. Is it not the very question that every soul must answer? Can scattered, powerless deities — whether idols, stars, humans, or any other creation — truly compare to the One who created the heavens and the earth, who sustains all life, and whose power subdues everything?

This verse teaches us the essence of Tawhid (monotheism) — the foundation of Islam. It invites us to free our hearts from the servitude of creation and to direct our worship solely to the Creator. When you recognize that Allah is Al-Wahid, the One, your heart finds peace in knowing that there is only One to turn to. When you understand that He is Al-Qahhar, the Subduer, you realize that no power on earth can harm you or benefit you except by His will.

Let this beautiful call of Yusuf, peace be upon him, resonate in your heart. Embrace the worship of the One True God, and you will taste the sweetness of faith that no divided loyalty to false gods can ever provide. For indeed, the heart that submits to Allah alone finds true liberation, even within the walls of a prison.

📜 Verse 37-41 — Yusuf

He said, "You will not receive food that is provided to you except that I will inform you of its interpretation before it comes to you. That is from what my Lord has taught me. Indeed, I have left the religion of a people who do not believe in Allah, and they, in the Hereafter, are disbelievers.
And I have followed the religion of my fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. And it was not for us to associate anything with Allah. That is from the favor of Allah upon us and upon the people, but most of the people are not grateful.
O [my] two companions of prison, are separate lords better or Allah, the One, the Prevailing?
You worship not besides Him except [mere] names you have named them, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. Legislation is not but for Allah. He has commanded that you worship not except Him. That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know.
O two companions of prison, as for one of you, he will give drink to his master of wine; but as for the other, he will be crucified, and the birds will eat from his head. The matter has been decreed about which you both inquire."
