Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound moment, Prophet Yusuf (Joseph), peace be upon him, was still in prison, yet his heart was filled with unwavering trust in Allah. When he interpreted the dreams of his two cellmates — the king's cupbearer and the baker — he knew through divine insight that the cupbearer would be released and return to serve the king. Seizing this opportunity, Yusuf turned to the cupbearer and said: *"Mention me to your master"* — meaning, tell the king about my situation, that I am an innocent man unjustly imprisoned, and perhaps this will lead to my release.
However, the verse then reveals a profound lesson in divine wisdom: "But Satan caused him to forget mentioning him to his master." The cupbearer, once freed, became preoccupied with his own life and completely forgot Yusuf's request. This was not a failure on Yusuf's part, but rather a test from Allah. The Prophet Yusuf had placed his hope in a human being, and Allah — in His infinite wisdom — wanted to teach him and all of humanity that true reliance should be placed solely on Allah, not on the promises or actions of people.
As a result, "he remained in prison for several years" — according to most scholars, this was seven additional years. Yet, throughout this long and difficult period, Yusuf never lost his faith. He remained patient, steadfast, and devoted to Allah. This delay was not a punishment but a divine preparation — Allah was refining Yusuf's character, deepening his reliance on Him alone, and preparing him for a greater role that would require complete trust in the Divine plan.
A Message of Hope and Reflection:
Dear reader, this story carries a beautiful and timeless lesson for all of us. How often do we place our hopes in people — expecting them to help us, remember us, or fulfill their promises — only to be disappointed? How often do we rely on our own plans and forget that Allah's plan is far greater and more perfect?
The story of Yusuf teaches us that even when human means fail, Allah's wisdom prevails. The cupbearer's forgetfulness was not a tragedy; it was a divine appointment. Those extra years in prison were not wasted — they were years of spiritual elevation, during which Yusuf's reputation for wisdom, honesty, and trustworthiness grew so much that when the king eventually needed him, he was called not merely as a prisoner seeking release, but as a man of honor and integrity.
So, if you are going through a delay in your prayers being answered, if you feel that doors are closed and people have forgotten you, remember Yusuf. Allah had not forgotten him for a single moment. Every day of that imprisonment was part of a magnificent plan that would eventually place Yusuf in charge of Egypt's treasures, saving an entire nation from famine.
Put your trust in Allah, not in the forgetfulness or faithfulness of people. For Allah's timing is perfect, His wisdom is profound, and His love for His righteous servants never fails. The delay is often the preparation — and what Allah has prepared for you is always greater than what you could have imagined for yourself.
