Tafsir (Interpretation):
When Yusuf (peace be upon him) had fully prepared his brothers' provisions — giving each of them a full camel-load of grain, and to his full brother Binyamin an equal share — he set in motion a wise and compassionate plan. He ordered his servants to secretly place his royal drinking cup, which was also the official measuring vessel for the grain trade, into Binyamin's saddlebag, without anyone's knowledge.
As the brothers departed from Egypt heading back to their homeland, Yusuf sent a herald after them. The herald called out loudly to stop the caravan: "O people of this caravan! Indeed, you are thieves!" This accusation was made in appearance, for Yusuf knew well that his brothers were not thieves in reality — but this was a divinely guided strategy to keep his beloved brother Binyamin close to him, as part of the unfolding plan that Allah had decreed.
This verse teaches us profound lessons. First, it shows the wisdom of Yusuf — a prophet of Allah — in handling difficult family situations with patience, intelligence, and gentleness rather than confrontation. He could have simply revealed himself, but Allah's plan required a gradual unfolding. Second, it reminds us that Allah's decree prevails over all human schemes, and that what appears to be a difficult situation may actually be a mercy in disguise. Third, it demonstrates the beautiful bond between Yusuf and his brother, and how Allah reunites those who love each other in ways beyond human imagination.
Dear reader, reflect on how Allah turned Yusuf's years of hardship — being thrown into a well, sold as a slave, and imprisoned — into a position of power and authority. Never lose hope in Allah's mercy and planning. Whatever trials you face today may be the very means by which Allah elevates you tomorrow. Trust in Him, for He is the Best of Planners, and His wisdom surpasses all understanding.
