Word Meanings:
- آوَى إِلَيْهِ (aawa ilayhi): He drew him close, embraced him, and gave him a place of honor and intimacy.
- فَلَا تَبْتَئِسْ (fa-la tabta'is): Do not grieve, do not be sad, and do not let distress overcome you.
Explanation of the Verse:
When the brothers of Yusuf (Joseph) entered upon him in Egypt — having come, as the story unfolds, seeking grain during the famine — they were accompanied by their youngest brother, Benjamin (Binyamin), the full brother of Yusuf from the same mother. Yusuf had previously instructed them to bring this brother if they wished to receive provisions, and now, seeing him, his heart was moved with deep brotherly affection.
Yusuf took Benjamin aside privately, drew him close, and revealed his true identity in secret. He said to him: "I am truly your brother — Yusuf, the one whom they threw into the well years ago." He then comforted him, saying: "Do not grieve or feel distressed over what our brothers did to us in the past — their cruelty, their jealousy, their casting me into the darkness of the well, and their separating us from one another. For Allah has turned that harm into good, has elevated me in this land, and has now reunited us in this blessed meeting."
Yusuf asked Benjamin to keep this secret hidden from the other brothers, so that the divine plan could continue to unfold as Allah willed.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse carries a profound lesson in patience, forgiveness, and trust in Allah's decree. Yusuf, peace be upon him, endured years of separation, slavery, and imprisonment — yet when he met his brother, he did not speak of revenge or bitterness. Instead, he spoke words of comfort and reassurance, focusing on the goodness Allah had brought forth from the trials.
Dear reader, this is the character of a true believer: one who sees the hand of Allah in every hardship, who understands that what appears to be a calamity may be the very seed of a great blessing. Yusuf did not say, "Look what they did to me!" He said, "Do not grieve for what they did." He chose mercy over resentment, and unity over division.
How beautiful is this example for us today! When we face harm from those closest to us, we are called to rise above anger and vengeance, to forgive as we hope to be forgiven, and to trust that Allah — the Best of Planners — will never abandon those who remain patient and righteous. The reunion of Yusuf and Benjamin is a living proof that no matter how long the night of separation, the dawn of reunion is always near for those who hold fast to faith.
Let this verse inspire you to mend broken ties, to speak kindly even to those who wronged you, and to place your complete reliance on Allah, who turned the pit of a well into a palace of power, and the tears of a child into the crown of a king.
