Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Mādha" (ماذا): What is it that...
- "Tafqidūn" (تفقدون): You are missing/losing. *Al-Faqd* (الفقد) means the absence of something from one's perception, such that its whereabouts are unknown.
Tafsir (Explanation):
When the royal crier called out, "O caravan, you are indeed thieves!"—a charge that struck shock and bewilderment into the hearts of Yusuf's brothers—they turned around to face the caller and his companions, responding not with guilt or evasion, but with a question of utter innocence and astonishment: "What is it that you are missing?"
Their words carried a tone of confidence and clarity, as if to say: *We are not people of theft, and we have taken nothing. So tell us—what loss have you suffered that you would accuse us so?* This question was not an admission of wrongdoing, but rather a demand for evidence and a display of their clean conscience. They had no idea that the "missing item" was the royal drinking cup, which Yusuf—peace be upon him—had secretly placed in his brother Binyamin's saddlebag as part of a divine plan to keep his beloved full-brother with him.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse teaches us a profound lesson in how a believer should respond to false accusations. Notice how the brothers did not panic, nor did they retaliate with harsh words. Instead, they faced the accusers directly and asked calmly: *"What are you missing?"* This is the etiquette of a noble soul—to meet suspicion with clarity, and to respond to hostility with composure.
In our own lives, when we are misunderstood or wrongly blamed, let us remember this beautiful example: answer with wisdom, not anger; with facts, not emotion. And know that Allah, the All-Knowing, sees the truth of every matter. He who protected Yusuf's brothers from shame despite their past errors—and ultimately reunited them in mercy—is the same Lord who turns trials into triumphs for those who trust in Him. So hold firm to honesty, for the Qur'an tells us that truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. And never forget: the One who knows what is hidden in the hearts and in the saddlebags is the One who will bring justice to every affair, in this life and the next.
