Surah Yusuf — Verse 72

Word Meanings:

• Suwaa' (صُوَاع): The king's drinking cup or measuring vessel, which was also used to measure grain.
• Himlu ba'eer (حِمْلُ بَعِيرٍ): A camel-load of grain — a full load that a camel would carry.
• Za'eem (زَعِيم): A guarantor, surety, or one who takes responsibility for fulfilling a promise.

Tafsir (Explanation):

The herald and those around him responded to the brothers of Yusuf (Joseph), peace be upon him, saying: "We are missing the king's measuring cup." This was the royal vessel used for measuring grain during the time of famine — and its loss was treated as a matter of great importance, for it belonged to the ruler himself.

Then they announced a generous reward to encourage its return: "And for whoever brings it, a camel-load of grain." This was a substantial prize, especially in a time of drought and scarcity, making it a powerful incentive that would motivate anyone to come forward.

The herald then added, personally guaranteeing the reward: "And I am responsible for it." — meaning, "I personally vouch for this reward and will ensure it is delivered to whoever returns the cup."

This scene reflects the wisdom of Prophet Yusuf's plan. He had secretly placed the royal cup in his brother's bag to keep him with him, and now the announcement was made in a way that would lead the brothers to search their own belongings — ultimately fulfilling Yusuf's divine plan to retain his brother, as Allah had willed.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Notice how this verse highlights the noble qualities of honesty, trustworthiness, and fulfilling promises — even in a worldly matter. The herald did not merely announce a reward; he personally guaranteed it, showing that a true believer stands by his word and takes responsibility for what he promises.

Islam teaches us to be people of integrity — when we say something, we mean it; when we promise, we fulfill it. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: *"The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he promises, he breaks his promise; and when he is entrusted, he betrays the trust."* (Sahih al-Bukhari)

Let this verse inspire you to be a person of your word — in your family, your work, and your community. For indeed, Allah loves those who are truthful and trustworthy, and He elevates those who uphold their commitments with sincerity. And just as this reward was given for returning what was lost, imagine the far greater reward Allah has prepared for those who return what is entrusted to them and fulfill their covenants in this life — a reward that no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no heart has ever imagined.
