Surah Yusuf — Verse 73

Explanation of the Verse:

The brothers of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph), peace be upon him, responded to the accusation of theft leveled against them after the royal cup was found in their brother’s bag. They swore by Allah, saying: "By Allah, you have certainly known – from what you have witnessed of our conduct and character throughout our stay in Egypt – that we did not come here to spread corruption in the land, nor have we ever been thieves." They appealed to the knowledge and observation of the Egyptians themselves, reminding them of their evident integrity, honesty, and good behavior since their arrival. Their words carried a tone of innocence and moral uprightness, as they affirmed that theft was utterly foreign to their nature and history.

This verse teaches us a profound lesson about the power of a good reputation and consistent character. The brothers, despite their past mistakes, had shown such uprightness in Egypt that they could confidently appeal to the people’s own witness of their conduct.
