Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • عُصْبَةٌ (Usbah): A strong group or company of people; here it refers to a band of ten brothers who could accomplish matters together.
  • ضَلَالٍ مُبِينٍ (Dalal Mubin): A clear error or evident mistake — not in the sense of religious misguidance, but a perceived error in judgment.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse takes us back to the moment when the brothers of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph), peace be upon him, spoke among themselves, driven by jealousy and resentment. They said: "Indeed, Yusuf and his brother [Benjamin] are more beloved to our father than we are, while we are a strong group." They were ten able-bodied men, capable of protecting the family and managing affairs, yet their father, Prophet Ya'qub (Jacob), peace be upon him, showed clear preference for Yusuf and his full brother Benjamin — the two youngest sons from his most beloved wife, Rahil.

Their words reveal a heart full of envy and a twisted perception. They even went so far as to declare: "Indeed, our father is in clear error" — meaning they believed their father's judgment was flawed and unjustified in favoring the two younger brothers over them, without any apparent reason they could see. This was not an accusation of religious deviation, for they knew their father was a prophet of Allah, but rather a complaint about what they perceived as a mistake in his parental treatment.

This moment is a profound lesson for humanity. It shows how jealousy can blind even the children of a prophet, leading them to question their father's wisdom and to plot against their own brother. Yet, within this story lies a beautiful reminder: Allah's plan prevails over human schemes. The very jealousy that led them to cast Yusuf into the well became the means by which Allah elevated him to a position of power and honor in Egypt, and ultimately brought the entire family together in forgiveness and mercy.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse invites you to examine your own heart. How often do we compare ourselves to others and feel that we are being treated unfairly? How often does envy creep into our souls, making us see faults in those who love us? The brothers of Yusuf were not evil men by nature — they were good men overtaken by a moment of weakness. But Allah teaches us through their story that envy is a fire that burns the one who carries it before it harms others. The Quran urges us to be content with what Allah has decreed, to trust in His wisdom, and to remember that He distributes His favors as He wills. When you feel jealousy stirring in your heart, turn to Allah in supplication and ask Him to purify your soul, for truly, the one who is content with Allah's decree finds peace, while the one who resists it only multiplies his own sorrow. And know that the story of Yusuf, with all its trials, ends with a reunion of hearts and a forgiveness that shames all enmity — a testament to the beauty of patience and trust in Allah.

And thus will your Lord choose you and teach you the interpretation of narratives and complete His favor upon you and upon the family of Jacob, as He completed it upon your fathers before, Abraham and Isaac. Indeed, your Lord is Knowing and Wise."

Kill Joseph or cast him out to [another] land; the countenance of your father will [then] be only for you, and you will be after that a righteous people."
